I did find this in the Winnipeg Free Press (confirmation from the Manitoba premier that True Norh has sought financial help)

Premier confirms help sought on NHL bid - Winnipeg Free Press

But as reported in today’s Free Press, that doesn’t include funding to cover team losses.

Selinger told radio station CJOB this morning the provincial government wouldn’t consider "anything like that."

there we go

I wonder if they will try to go the route of creating a crown corp to buy an interest in the arena (like BC Place) and get a cut of non-hockey related revenues generated

Lots of speculation that no re-alignment will occur this season - Winnipeg (if they get the Thrashers) will remain in the SE division. Stamkos, St. Louis, Lecavalier, Ovechkin etc. will be good drawas for home games.

mirtle has a story ... I didnt realize Quebecor wants the provincial govt to 100% fund the new arena ... I guess it doesnt hurt to ask lol

Should Winnipeg, Quebec NHL bids get public funds? - The Globe and Mail

as for Winnipeg:

Putting the burden on the taxpayers, in any form, is rarely popular these days when it comes to sports facilities, especially in light of all the criticism the City of Glendale is facing over its bailout of the Phoenix Coyotes.

What we don't have in either case above is hard numbers as to what these deals would cost the governments involved. In the Winnipeg scenario, 70 per cent of the building was built with private funds, leaving only 30 per cent that was split between the city, provincial and federal governments for the MTS Centre.

So it's possible there's only a small about of debt relief at play there.

Maybe the Pacific/Northwest divisions won't have the worst travel schedule this year...

Part of a blog post from Damien Cox (yeah I know he's brutal)

Finally, hearing whispers that negotiations between Atlanta and Winnipeg over the future of the Thrashers may be slowed by the difficulty in reaching a sale price. The team is valued at about $60 million by industry analysts, and the Winnipeg group backed by Mark Chipman and David Thomson may be wondering why they are being asked to pay $160 million or more.

Part of that is an NHL relocation fee, to which Chipman and Thomson might wonder why they should have to pay such a cost given that the Thrashers can't stay in Atlanta and have nowhere else to go but Winnipeg. Short of folding the Thrashers, which in many ways would be the most sensible thing to do, the NHL has to do business with Winnipeg, which should give Chipman and Thomson useful leverage.

1. Fold the Thrashers and the Coyotes.
2. Evander Kane becomes a Shark
3. ???
4. Stanley Cup Champions

I don't think Donald Fehr would go for 60+ players suddenly in an unemployment line.

/The next NHL CBA talks are going to be very scary...

I am in Maryland and for some reason my wife is a Thrasher fan so I watch a ton of their games. While she would like them to stay since she is not from the the Atlanta area she wont be too upset so she would probably still be a fan after they move.
