I have confirmed that the Atlanta Spirit and True North are in negotiations about sale and relocation of #Thrashers. Story to come soon.

If this Thrashers relocation results in the Red Wings moving to the Eastern Conference, dash will be doing the Happy Gilmore dance...

They'll probably move the CBJ or Predators, and put them in the Southeast

I think Mike Illitch has been campaigning for some time trying to get the Wings back in the East. I agree dare that it probably makes the most sense to put the Preds in the SE division.

Bill Daly (by saying nothing) has confirmed that this deal is all but done (none of the "we are committed to Phoenix long term like he always says with the Coyotes).

The Atlanta Spirit has begun negotiations with True North Sports and Entertainment on the sale of the Thrashers, which would result in relocation to Winnipeg, according to a person familiar with the NHL’s sale process.

A deal has not been completed and it is also not known how long the two sides have been negotiating. However, the fact that talks are on-going negotiations could mean the Thrashers would relocate to Manitoba perhaps as soon as next season.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, reach via e-mail, said there was "nothing I'm prepared to say at this point." A True North Sports and Entertainment spokesperson had no comment.

Negotiations began after a buyer willing to purchase the Thrashers and keep the team in Atlanta could not be found.

The Atlanta Spirit, working a New York investment firm, has had interest from several potential buyers about the Thrashers. However, none have progressed past the preliminary stage.

I still cant believe Phoenix is staying.

The City of Glendale put up $25 million (actually $50 million) whereas the city of Atlanta has put up nada. That's the main difference.

and when Glendale runs out of money (or turns off the tap, at least), the Coyotes will be still scrambling for another place to call home.

I would see Nashville or Columbus moving before Detroit too.

Illitch has a strong argument (though Columbus is technically further to the East), but the Wings have are overwhelming the team that can best handle the additional costs of the travel compared to Nashville and Columbus.

I think the league would probably like to keep Detroit and Chicago in the same division given the resurgence of their rivalry in the last few years.

How does Bettman's Wet Dream not have the Caps and Pens?

I figure he'd sell his children to have OV vs. Crosby for the division.

Actually, I think this is an excuse to pull the trigger on:

Northwest - Bobby Hull Division (Winnipeg)
Pacific - Wayne Gretzky Division (Los Angeles)
Central - Gordie Howe Division (Houston)
Bettman's Wet Dream - Mario Lemieux Division (Pittsburgh)
Atlantic - Mark Messier Division (New York)
Northeast - Bobby Orr Division (Boston)
