Windows (7 Pro) update downloaded the 2.6GB Windows 10 and it's been stuck on preparing for installation for 3 hours and 25 minutes. WTF! It seems to still be downloading something.

Frustrating bullshit. I Started this 11 hours ago.

There are quite a few sites that will pop up if you look into that problem with fixes so I won't repost them here.

The built in process isn't as sure as going to their site and downloading the installer to a USB drive (or DVD) and doing the upgrade through that.

I haven't used the self updating process on any of my machines. I'm sure I've upgraded at least 25 machines so far and none had those kinds of issues doing it from the downloaded installer.

I tried to update to 10, but I have a corrupt or missing file in 7 that prevents the update and i have no idea how to fix it.

Did you do that upgrade through the downloaded installer from their site?

Have you looked up the exact message as it appeared when it failed on google to see if others have a work around?

You can open an admin command prompt (Start a Command Prompt as an Administrator)
And type:
sfc /scannow

It doesn't always actually fix problems, but if there are missing or corrupted files from the core OS it will be documented in the output log.

I'm not one for chasing my tail around bad OS's. I'd rather backup all data from the machine and go clean. That's what I do with most of the machines I manage. If there is no quick fix, nuke it and bring the data back in.

Only problem with what you are trying to do is, if you haven't already upgraded to 10 you still have to install 7 over again and then upgrade to 10. You must do this full process once on every machine. After that you can do a clean install to 10 any time you need to.

FWIW, on my home machines I did the upgrade and then purposely nuked it again and did a fresh clean install from 10 directly and I haven't had any issues or problems of any kind. It may take time, but it's time well spent IMO.

Well, preparing for installation finished the 12th hour. It took 15 minutes for Win 10 to install. LOL.

However, I was one of those unlucky bastards who couldn't get internet access due to airplane mode. I just got it fixed today. Un-installing my firewall/virus protection gave me internet back.

Sorry about the trouble. On my end, updated four computers from Win 7 to Win 10 without issue, and two of them were Mac Boot Camp partitions.

I had no issues updating any of my systems. Two Win8 laptops and even a Vista PC that had been updated to Win8. Thus far I'm happy with the new Windows.

Windows 10, by Microsoft's own definition, is malware (spyware).

When Microsoft Bragged About Spying on Windows 10 Users

Included in Microsoft's new "free" operating system - a key-logger, a program logger, a information gathering process you can't kill (cortana) without affecting some search functionality and a no-choice spam message (which you can disable) Upgrade Now or Later. Cortana could easily be updated and reactivated by a hotfix, so if you're confident you got rid of her, keep an eye out for a resurrection. Who really knows how deep the data collection goes and what lengths you need to go to get rid of it all? Unless you are bound to Windows binaries / proprietary software - I'd ditch it.

Other than a few games I enjoy, I'd get rid of it altogether. It's quarantined on my network for being the information soul sucker that it is.

Does it work well? Sure it does, but at what cost?

Get the ISO download and burn to DVD or put on a USB stick. Microsoft offers a special tool for this on their website. Then backup all your data and do an upgrade from the DVD/USB, and if that doesn't work try a clean install, but you'll have to reinstall all your programs. (don't forget to save your browser favorites!)

Their security update of 4/13 broke one of our mission critical apps last night and the vendor has no fix for it so we had to uninstall that update and disable updates on it. First such problem we've had.

Network feature update? I know there was a patch that had to do with Windows to Samba file sharing, as a matter of fact it also had to be patched on the Linux side. Thing is according to the security experts though if you really needed this patch you have bigger problems than just file sharing between Windows and Linux servers...

The computer in question sits in one of our casino cages and the app that broke processes check cashing authorizations. After that update the app would error out on load with a network communication error. The roll back of course fixed it. The vendor reported others having the same problem. The funny part is the same vendor also has our cash advance (CC processing) on there and that app had no problems. So it's poor coding on their end? :noidea:

Wasn't happy with the vendor. They have only been scrambling to be 10 compliant over the last few months as many of us are telling them to get complaint before the free upgrade window ends or risk losing us as customers. They never supported 8 even.

Would anybody else like the "sign out" and "sleep" functions to be integrated into a single click?
I know it's being petty, but it drives me nuts when I sign out that I have to wait for the login screen to come back up before I can put the PC to sleep.

When was this? Just saw a Samba security update listed for today 04/15/16 in Slackware - but, pre-patch, Samba is working without hiccups. The Windows 10 machine is up-to-date.

Applying the security updates now - I suppose it's yet another reason not to have Samba running 24/7 - below

... and another reason not to have Windows passwords and Linux passwords match for users. The credentials on my Windows box differ (i.e. smbpasswd) from the user logins on the linux side. I couldn't care less if my Windows machine gets hacked as there is no info on it worth taking. The Linux side is another matter.

Isn't there a way to get rid of the login screen? Annoying!
