I didn't know about their QB being out. I don't think I have a problem with Coaches not burning a redshirt.
Numerous reasons for that. One would be, in this type of instance, it's kinduva unfair to the player to have
sat him all year and then cost him a full year of eligibility at the end.

It really depends on the situation. But in this situation they had three games left at 3-6 against three bad to mediocre teams.

Starting the backup (who is also the coach's son BTW) pretty much admitted that they gave up on the season. At this point they'd be better off forfeiting their remaining games.

I get your point about not being fair to the player, but in this case not burning one means not being competitive in any of the remaining games. I mean, they played CCU tough but they're arguably the worst team in the country and they also had their starting QB out.

Alright, next year I really swear I’m not going to do this again. Every damn year people complain about too many bowls, and I read their posts. I get to the end of the posts, and I realize I’ve been had. Still not one solid reason given for restricting, and for good reason since no solid reason exist. The very existence of a bowl provided by the free market is reason enough to justify the bowls’ existence.

I think we're heading for an excess of bowl eligible teams this year

How is “diminishing the value of making a bowl” not a valid reason? You might disagree with it, but it’s valid.

So you would actually deny the fans, sponsers, and players the right to play in bowl that the free market determines is valued and financially feasible. Are you aware you’re a communist or has that not hit you yet?

Well, I guess you could say the free market is working. But, not really supply/demand is at work. The schools are subsidizing a whole lot of bowls because they have to purchase a minimum number of tickets. They actually lose money going to some bowls. The locals are not willing to pony up the money so the schools and their taxing entities are willing to do so. So, I guess subsidizing them is a form of a free market. Not a good one, but if someone is willing to lose money, then so be it.

130.

btw...There will still be 130 next year.

Idaho is dropping back to 1-AA, but Liberty is moving up
And last I saw, only about 30-32 didn't need some kind of financial assistance from the university to break even...but it student fees or some other form of revenue.

In reality...there is a supply and demand. It's just an oddball supply and demand.

There is a supply of teams that want to go and there is a demand for bowls.

That's a bragging point on the recruiting trail. Now the short-sighted posters will discuss
how "anybody can go to a bowl." That's not true. (Unless of shortage). We all know where the
5-stars are going and the vast, vast majority of 4-stars are going. But the 3-stars have a bit more
of a choice.

Players get 500 bucks of free stuff at bowls. A couple of bowls give every player a 500 dollar
gift card to Best Buy. I've read numerous stories where players buy their families their
Christmas Gifts off of those gift cards.

There is no monetary difference between level of Bowl. The players at the Fiesta Bowl get 500
bucks of free gifts and the players at the Camelia Bowl get 500 dollars of free stuff. When you're
Boise St and you can tell a recruit, we've been to 15 straight bowls...that means something. If
nothing else...2 grand of free stuff and a chance to be treated like royalty for 4 total weeks
in your career.

Boise has been 15 straight times. Bama can't say that. Clemson can't. As a matter of fact only 5 schools have been more consecutive times.

Yeah...there are empty seats, but when you look at percentage of stadium capacity, I think you'll
discover that the lowest turnouts are at stadiums with 6-6 Power 5 teams...not mid-majors.

There's a demand for bowl games.

Look at the Cure Bowl in Orlando. That's an AAC team vs a Sun Belt team. Those guys get 500
bucks, an all-you-can-eat Buffet every day they're here, plus they go to Disney World for the
day, along with their fans. What do the folks at the Fiesta Bowl do? Go to the desert and watch the Cactus
grow?

Let 'em play.

We put like 5 of 7 weeks worth of B1G player of the week in there. We deserve a BOWL at 4-8!!!

Nevermind it was the opposing team who earned that rating agains our 11 players they are claiming to be defense.

There you go.

I’m not denying that these games are financially feasible, but that doesn’t mean they should be played. But you have identified exactly why there is this glut of pointless bowl games though, and it is the corruption of college football by money.

The very existence of a bowl provided by the free market is reason enough to justify the bowls’ existence.
I could not disagree with you more.

How is it “corrupted?” Because it doesn’t lead to the result that you want? If a bowl game makes money, it’s because there are a high enough number of people interested in the game being played.

Then you don’t believe in the free market. That’s your right.

On a side note, I’ll bet when people complain about smut on TV you are the first to say, “then just turn it off.” Yet you don’t give the same response when there are more bowl games than you would prefer on TV. :noidea:

I am a capitalist by profession, in the most literal sense, but college sports are not a "market".
