Yeah, but in reading the rules I'm not confident that mattered. It said you can't leave the bench (which he did, even if ruled legal) for the purpose of immediately starting an altercation. I could've just missed that, I skimmed through the rule in its entirety.

It may have, but what I think played a more significant role is that Shaw got nothing for a very dangerous hit on Pavelski and the league realized they dropped the ball on that decision, so they decided to give Clowe a reduced sentence.

I was thinking the same thing. it seems like this is their version of an in game make up call.

I heard Blob MacKenzie say earlier in the season when another play was being looked into that both the players and owners wanted regular suspension length despite the shortened season. But even if we assume the suspensions are being shortened to account for the shortened season, that should be at least 6 games. I mean there have been all kinds of iffy suspensions that can be pretty subjective sometime, but I'm not sure it can get much more black and white than this.

I don't know if it's because he's a Newfie or what but Clowe can't seem to tell the differene between being on the ice or being on the bench. Wasn't it about a year ago that he played the puck from the bench?
