I'm curious to see what he says about others. I'm betting there's more trash talking that goes on.

I'd never buy the book, of course, but I'm sure others will post some of the better comments.

I'm more interested in how Keith Law got the idea that Pedroia "wasn't good last year."

Klaw: I'd leave him at 2b for the time being and let him continue to hit, including a solid length of time at AAA. At least take the year to see how Pedroia bounces back after thumb surgery - he wasn't good last year, and in a tiny sample he's been worse so far this year. If Pedroia does bounce back, I'd consider moving Betts to the outfield.

Chat: Chat with Keith Law - SportsNation - ESPN

Pedroia's 2013 stats: .301/.372/.415, 115 OPS+, 6.6 bWAR (6th in AL), 5.4 fWAR (10th in AL).

Interesting comparison, until you look at the numbers. Cano has only played one more year than Pedroia, they are both outstanding defensively, and they are very similar in both BA and OBP. Given Cano's 100+ advantage in HR and 300+ edge in RBI, however, I have to disagree with Mo.

Pedroia rates as a considerably better defender and baserunner. Cano does have about 6 more WAR than Pedroia, but he also has about 2 more years worth of PA than Pedroia. Some of it has to do with durability (Cano's been among the most durable players in the league, Pedroia missed significant time in 2010) and Cano came in the league early 2005 and played over 120 games. Pedroia only played about 30 games in 2006 and became the full time starting 2B in 2007. So Pedroia actually has more WAR per games.

I'd say Pedroia was better up until 2012. Cano was miles ahead in 2012. 2013 was a lot closer, but Cano was still more valuable. They're both excellent ballplayers. Being considered the "inferior player" to the other guy shouldn't be seen as an insult.

I don't see any real rationale for 2013 being a lot closer then 2012. I'm not sure how you could say Pedroia was the better player up until 2012 either. Their stats were pretty much the same up until Cano started hitting for power in about 2009 and he's kind of left him in the dust since then.

Mo's criteria seems to be "heart" but I'd rather have double the home runs anyway.

Pedroia had 19 more games played in 2013 (160) than in 2012 (141). 5.1 bWAR in 2012... 6.6 in 2013. Though regardless of what WAR you look at, Cano comes out ahead in 2013.

I think anytime you have two guys playing the same position and one has 30+ more points in OPS+ then the other it's really not close at all.

most defensive metrics had Pedroia ahead of Cano last year by a pretty decent margin (as much as ~10 runs).

I get that you love Pedroia. He is a good player. Hard to argue that Cano's lead by more than 100 HRs and 300 RBI doesn't make Cano the better player, though, isn't it? Pedroia is an outstanding defensive player, but Cano is too.

I think Cano's the better player right now. But it has nothing to do with the RBIs.
