Why don't more teams have their AAA affiliate in close proximity?

Mets and Yankees both have single-A affiliates in the city limits, both of which serve as good places for a rehab stint. I saw Jose Reyes in Coney island a couple seasons ago...was a big deal for my son

I used to think the main reason to have an affiliate so far away was to build more of a national fan base, but i don't know how much that actually happens. If the parent club sucks or they don't have a lot of farm players that you saw in double-A, you probably won't be a fan

Those are Short Season affiliates.

I'm not all that familiar on what happened to land them in Vegas other than "teams play musical chairs every two seasons and the Mets got left out" somehow. Not sure who broke up with whom between the Mets and the Tidewater region; I think the short story is that the parent club took the affiliate for granted, and did not do enough investing in the team or the community. I think the real answer is that Baltimore just came in and made better offers.

The Mets changed affiliations to New Orleans, then Buffalo, and then Vegas happened. I didn't really care about the team in Vegas, other than when the callups had to make that long trip. Not like I'm going to go out there for a game. Never once attended a game in Norfolk, either. I'll go to Cyclones games because they're a subway ride away.

Essentially the reason they left Norfolk is because Norfolk got boo-boo faced that the Mets didn't kiss their ass properly. I believe that was around the time Scranton opened up and the Mets wanted to be there real bad. Unfortunately, for them, Scranton really wanted to hitch their wagon to the Yankees. So that's why they parked their affiliate in New Orleans for 2 years. Buffalo opens up and the Mets go there, until Buffalo gets boo-boo faced that the Mets didn't kiss their ass properly. They also made googly eyes at Toronto, who reciprocated. Thus the Mets ended up in Las Vegas because the music stopped and the Mets didn't have a chair.

The Cyclones are having Uncle Rico night in August...a bobble head giveaway and an appearance by Uncle Rico himself. Classy

That's not the reason they were in Vegas and you know it.

Regardless of the reason it was a piss poor idea. It's too far away to call on players when needed and it was a launching pad making it difficult at best to accurately rate their players. Also, Citifield is a pitchers park and it makes zero sense to have your AAA pitchers afraid to pitch to contact because the ball travels so far there. Throw in having to send players on rehabs to closer affiliates with less competition or all the way out there was a hassle.

You say that like the Mets had a choice in going there. Why do you continue to push that narrative?

In that case enlighten us. Why did the Mets put their AAA team in Vegas?
