Why do we have divisions within conferences?

Other than geography for scheduling, what purpose do divisions play? I can think of several negative consequences but what are the positives. Lot of chatter this offseason about doing away with them, even heard discussion today of changing them every so many years. What we do know is we’d get better CCG games, but that doesn’t always translate to what’s best for getting a conference rep in a 4 team playoff. Discuss.

we dont know we would get better CCG's.
we could get them at times but its not to say we would every year.
look at the SEC. find a year when you would have changed teams and not gone with who was in.

How is pitting the two best conference records going head-to-head for the finale not guaranteeing a better CCG?

CCG's are all about money. Hence the divisions to make them appear more legit.

The only reason the Big 12 added a CCG with 10 teams is because that extra win (12) is typically needed to get into the CFP if you're not undefeated.

If you get rid of divisions and still want CCG you likely have to decrease overall teams in conference.
the reason it works Big 12 is because they play everyone.
if you were to try and do that with 14 team conferences then you have teams that dont play and then end up with multiple teams with same in conference record.
with the divisions then you have 2 smaller sets to decide who plays at the end.

I'm not big on CCG's because they're often rematches. Same with putting two teams into the CFP that have already played.

How does it work for the Big 12 when it's a guaranteed rematch?

For one Conference, it's so they don't have to play each other.

Example:
Alabama has played Georgia exactly 9 times in the regular season, since 1990, when the SEC went to 2 divisions.

WTF is that exactly.

got the two best records here, but why one 7-1 and not the other?

the CCGs are full of this kind of shit and/or bullshit
Also, there are a lot of times when they do get the best records, but not the best teams due to a total unbalance schedule, espicially the crossovers.

This isn't going to change, but it's still bullshit.

We would be more likely to have the best two teams as opposed to the current system.

Lol but that’s my point, they only work out that way 50% of the time. The B1G, PAC and ACC all had much better teams in the same division as the eventual winner. All of which had same or better conference records and all three division runner ups of the eventual winner had better overall records and higher ranked than the cross division team who was represented in the CCG.

If that lesser division champ were to win that CCG they wouldn't get into the CFP though. They'd get a regular bowl and would likely have knocked the better division team out of the CFP.

Anything less than getting to the CFP is meaningless. Few remember who won a regular bowl game and ended up #8 in the final polls, other than that team's fans.

Because when you go to no divisions the schedules will play an even bigger role on who makes CCGs than they do now .

Imagine

A 3-0 top 5 Ohio St plays

Michigan
MSU
PSU
Wisky
Iowa
Nebraska
Minnesota
NW
Purdue

While 1-2 OOC Michigan plays

Ohio St
Rutgers
Illinois
Maryland
Indiana
NW
Minnesota
Purdue
MSU

OSU goes 7-2 beating Michigan

Michigan goes 8-1

Who's better ??

Divisions allow for at least some semblance of schedule balance . You do away with them and you'll often end up with worse teams in CCGs especially in leagues with only 8 league games where the bottom half sucks

The Big Xii is leading the way in this! The other P-5 Conferences shoudl do the same. Would make evening out the scheduling easier and provide better CCGs in general.
