I was kinda wondering why they didn't just put a bullet in its head.....

Rather than go overkill and blow the animal to pieces with shotguns. That did seem odd to me. I understand that they felt they couldn't wait for the humane society, but shotguns?

3 cops with shotguns killed it. :L

Totally unnecessary.

We already have one mountain lion in the local zoo that was shot further into to the city (114th and Dodge St) a few years ago. They tried to tranquilize that one, but it attacked before the drug could take affect, so one officer shot it in the hind quarter with a shotgun. They were able to save it.

This latest cat's carcass was sent to UNL for testing to see if it has a disease that would make it unafraid of being in they type of environment it was in. It's not natural for these types of animals to want to be in highly populated areas.

Imagine the public perception had that cat run off while the cops were waiting for the humane society? It would have been quite embarrassing and they'd likely have spent a lot of resources trying to find it considering it's obviously got no problem waltzing through a major city.

You're sure to hit it with a shotgun and finish the job. Using their service revolvers had risks.

My point is, you would have to get 15 feet away from the thing if you wanted to hit it with a shotgun. If you have access to shotguns, then you probably have a rifle.

So stand back another 50 feet and line up a shot to the head. 1 bullet, painless, no mess.

There literally must have been meat laying everywhere.

Also, isn't that a little dangerous firing off shotguns at a building?

It's not like this Lion was out in the open.

Rifle has way more penetration ability so it would have had a way higher chance of going into the building.

Those shotguns have a nice tight buckshot pattern and limit the chances of a ricocheting high power rifle or revolver bullet.

I'm sure the cops knew wtf they were doing to finish the job as quickly and safely to bystanders as possible. :L

It needed to be uffed because it was in the city.

It's not natural for that animal to be comfortable in a human populated environment. It's Game and Parks policy to put them down so they don't return. Not the Omaha police.

It likely got hit by a car thus breaking it's leg.
