It's definitely a gamble, but what better options were out there? Promote from within, or a guy like Cooley from PU? I'd rather take somewhat of a gamble with a higher payoff than turn to a guy like Cooley IMO.

i'd rather slap the interim tag on an assistant than gamble with Howard. You can get rid of the assistant at the end of the season, you're stuck with Howard for years now.

this is just an awful decision by Michigan.

Howard coached under Spo.

and if we're going to go down that route, DM was an assistant/team manager for 10+ years under Bill Self, one of the best cbb coaches in this generation. I don't think DM is a decent coach, but his run at Tulsa wasn't mediocre. Took them to their first NCAAT in over a decade. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he was great at Tulsa either, I would make it down as incomplete.

DM's resume in 2014 >>>> Howard's resume in 2019

Completely fair points.

Like I said, your stance is totally reasonable.

I don’t love NBA asst to College gifs either.

Ewing is getting the bigs recruits for obvious reasons. Let’s see him coach the team to success now.

recruiting isn't my concern with these guys. It's player development.

I have no idea why they didn’t hire the top assistant.

Everything I’ve read says he was the real mastermind behind their defense

If J Howard is able to assemble a solid coaching staff, he should be fine.

Well he just lost a huge part of Michigan becoming the defensive force that they were to a dying Texas program.

I've been back and forth with this hire. Its pretty much a mediocre hire IMO but the timing of Beilein's departure didn't help. Rumor's circling Phil Martelli from St. Joe's maybe interested in an assistant. This would be terrific hire.

It's like a week into the season. Kind of early to be making any final conclusions. But yes, trending towards being funny.

Way too early.

Kevin Ollie won a title and was still able to destroy the program
I don't expect Howard to be quite Ollie. He probably won't win a title his first few years, but he has an elite staff behind him unlike Ollie.

I would be hopeful too.

I’m saying it’s too early to call either way.

Guys like Ollie, Mike Davis, etc seem like great hires and then fade.

Ollie’s biggest mistake was no capitalizing on the recruiting trail after he title.

For example: Myles Powell’s dream school was UConn, but Ollie was too busy coming in 2nd for super big fish (aka the guys who got paid) rather than just build rock solid 4 star classes.
