Well calling Venus GOAT is silly no matter how much tennis you watch. I agree that’s an example of fame due to past greatness. If someone voted for Michael Jordan as a superstar in this thread that would be similar to what you’re saying.

To me fame is a huge factor in this thread, but not the only one.
If Jordan laced em up for somebody tomorrow, he’s a superstar.

You don’t age out of superstardom.

Unless you’re Karl Malone, that’s a different issue.

Tell that to all the people who missed LeBron and Curry above

I don’t understand where people are coming from leaving some of the biggest names in all of sports off their list.

Especially when they include guys who’ve won absolutely nothing. (Joker gets to another Finals, he makes my list. Superstars aren’t made in the regular season. Unless they kill it in the Dunk Contest)

Aside from when the guy is on their team. That I understand. I don’t like, it bothers me, but I know where the motivation is coming from.

Even if Superstar kinda entails being known and appreciated outside your own local fan base.

That is just it.

It is more that just being a great player.

You have to be great over the span of a few years AND you have to be a household name that even people who don’t follow the sport know.

That is what a superstar is.

That said, Joker is a 2 time MVP and a champion.

Kind of silly IMO to say he needs to do more.

I went to an NBA game in December with three people who had no idea who Jokic was.

Maybe this influenced my decision more than it should. Idk.

But Superstar takes time. Especially if your game is unathletic.

Either way. He’s in the gray area and nobody else is. Nobody else is close tbh. Anthony Davis prolly has the upper hand on anyone I don’t include. He gets prime time games, was a big deal in college and plays with the superstar or superstars currently.

Yeah, admittedly he is not the global icon that LeBron or Steph is, even though he is a much better player at this point.

But he is there even by your standards I believe.

Last 3 seasons has either been MVP or champion. Got 2nd in MVP voting last year, will be first or second this year. And he had a West Finals run in 2020 before the MVP seasons started.

That is 5 years of very high level accomplishment.

That says more about your friends' awareness than Jokic's greatness IMO.

AD gets overlooked because defense goes unnoticed and is undervalued in today's NBA. He doesn't consistently put up elite scoring numbers, so he's considered an also-ran. I'm sure many casuals consider Lebron the better defender because of his flashy chase down blocks. I didn't include AD in my superstars list as he doesn't get that recognition.

But, that’s exactly my point in regards to that poster.

Saying you have to be in the GOAT category to be a superstar, yet claiming Luka is a Superstar and Bron isn’t, implies Luka is a GOAT.

That’s just as absurd as making that claim about Venus.

Luka is awesome.

He’s been to the WCF once.

At least Venus has 7 singles grand slams and 14 doubles.
Luka does look a little like a goat

@PPhan with the classic homer-y and LeBron-hating list

Butler, Durant, Shai, Kawhi are superstars, LeBron, Tatum, and Luka aren't? Love to hear that logic...
Butler is the Homer in me, but I included him because he is a superstar come playoffs time. Missing out on Tatum and Lebron was a mistake, I meant to include them as well as Anthony Edwards.

Unless he changes his game, Luka's style of basketball won't win you a championship. Very overrated imo.

I agree, I wasn’t trying to be an expert but I was called out for my response so I defended it. I clearly am anything but an expert. Now if we are talking football or hockey I’m in that discussion.
I get it.

The point of a discussion thread is to have actual discussions.

So, unfair for me to say your voice shouldn’t be heard.

I could have just said I disagree with your stance based on your lack of exposure to the product.

The only possible reason is that they aren't NBA fans. I'm not a big hoops fan either, but I know all about Jokic. In fact this is the time of the season when I start watching NBA games ... and reading NBA threads, which is why this reply is 3 weeks late.. sorry about that.

I got to sit courtside to Jordan playing for the Wizards against the 17 win Nuggets. His presence still changed the entire feel of the game. No question in my mind 40 year old Jordan was still a superstar, even if nothing about his game said it anymore.

You are including too many guys man.

Superstars are the best of the best.

Types of players even people who don’t follow the NBA know who they are.

Most casual basketball fans couldn’t pick Anthony Edwards out of a lineup.

He is an excellent young player. But he isn’t mainstream.

I don’t think Ant is a superstar(yet), has to accomplish a lot more

But I disagree on casual fans not knowing him. I think almost any casual “fan” would know him.

In Minnesota?

Sure.

Everywhere else?

Nah.

Sure.

Everywhere else?

Nah.

It might be semantics

But if you’re a “fan” you definitely know a charismatic all star that is on national tv like 20 times this year

Plus social media

The average human being? Probably not. But a casual basketball fan definitively knows Edwards and probably about 30 other players minimum.

Shit, I’ve watched zero full games this year aside from 2 wolves games I’ve attended and I could name 8 players on every team.

Insane take
