I was just thinking about this and thought it would be cool to get eveyone's opinion.

There's a lot of ways to attack this, but for me I would look at it from roster depth and skill.

In the east I would pick the isles as generally they need more on the blue line and I don't see them getting to the next level other than building through the draft.

In the west, I think I would controversially choose the sharks. I think they have a solid core but I feel the team is on the decline. I don't think they need a complete overhaul by any means but I would hate to see them taking the same path as the flames.

What does everyone else think?

it depends on things I guess. I mean if they finish 9th thats worse no. but making the playoffs is revenue and only losing a spot or two in the draft in 8th spot. but I say flames

In the East, I would pick Toronto (they're riding some hot goaltending right now, but I still think they are pretenders).

In the West, Calgary (they need top draft picks)

That's a good point. If you are on the cusp it might actually be worse not to make the playoffs, it really comes down to the likelihood of getting lottery picks. Also, what picks you have or will trade away.

I think the Sharks should do a complete overhaul. Do what Philly did. Trade away Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski, Clowe, Boyle, Burns, get picks and prospects and get young. Yeah they might suck for a few seasons, but then you'd have a strong core (assuming they draft well, though that's something DWil isn't really known for) for years. If the Sharks did that I might start taking an interest in the team again. I haven't watched one minute of the Sharks this year. Couldn't even tell you what their record is. It's too bad, but watching the Sharks do the same thing over and over year after year really soured me on the team and since I don't have any geographical ties, I've lost interest. Wish I could find it so easy to drop the Mariners...

I'm a Mariners fan as well so I know how you feel. Pretty much resigned myself to the fact that they won't ever win the world series lol. They have a better than usual chance of making the playoffs this year. Oakland will likely stumble and the rangers are a question mark at this point.

Heh, glad to see another Mariners fan on here. The offense should be better, Morse and Morales will add some pop and the fences being moved in will help. I'm interested to see how the young guys do and I want to be excited for this season, but in the back of my mind I keep telling myself, it's still the Mariners. Hopefully they can surprise us, but yeah I still wouldn't count on the playoffs being very likely.

That's really the key...offense. Could you imagine how many more games they would have won last year if the bullpen got a little help?

Oh I know it. The bullpen did a really nice job last year and most of the arms are back so hopefully it will be more of the same this year. I feel bad for Felix too. Going back the last 3 years, the amount of games Felix has given up 2 runs or less and gotten a L or ND is ridiculous. Pretty sweet they were able to lock him up until 2019. I didn't think the M's front office would be willing to spend the money.

The front office's backs are against the wall though too. Revenue has gone up around the league on average the last few years. If they won't to capture some of that they have to lock up their only recognizable star.

Yeah that's true. The Mariners are also able to renegotiate their TV deal in 2 years I believe and after some of the TV deals that have been done recently, the Dodgers being the primary one that comes to mind, the M's stand to increase their revenues quite a bit. I just hope they use a good chunk of that money to try and bring in some more talent. The Mariners have never been a market that players have flocked to so you gotta spend a hefty amount to get decent players to go there.

Definitely the Kings and Rangers. They have so much to lose and nothing to gain by making the playoffs. ;)

I'd have to agree. There is a lot to be gained by playing in the playoffs. The learning experience for a tem's young players can be huge.

I'd way rather have my team finish 8th and lose in the first round then finish tenth and move up a few spots in the draft.

I don't think it would benefit the blue jackets to make the playoffs this year. Of course I don't think they'll have to worry about it either :bounce::bounce::bounce::rollseyes:

I agree to some extent but I think cases can be made both ways. The Blue Jackets have 2 other 1st rounders. 1 belongs to LA who is in their conference and also outside of the playoff picture right now. If the BJs get in then it becomes even less likely that LA does. The Jackets could use the revenue and as well as the buzz that a playoff appearance could create. Of course I'm talking about finishing 8th as opposed to 9th or 10th. I think the payoff would be worth dropping 1 or 2 spots in the draft. I doubt the Jackets finish that high though that they just miss the playoffs, and as you said this is all a moot point in their case.

Especially winning consistently. You don't have to win the Cup every year, but going to at least the second round of the playoffs for three years in a row is a great way to not only generate revenue now, but generate it in the future for all the young fans you can get.

It also gives your team more experience. That experience is invaluable to any team that's still finding their way.

How many teams win through draft picks & how many win through FA acquisition? I mean it's great to see your team get a top 5 pick, but in the end isn't it working the FA market or making that big trade to get the players needed to make a run at the Cup?
