Because he's a major jerk and no one likes him....That being said, McCown is on a fluke run that's all...He's a backup and always was for a reason, Cutler gives them the best chance to win if healthy....You could reason that you keep McCown in til his luck runs out but if it costs them a game now, it could be too late to change...

so was rich gannon

Of course the Cutler haters will say nothing after he put up big numbers against a top 10 defense on the road.

LOOK, the Bears have 2 good QBs. McCown is not as good as Cutler, but he's a very good backup. Most teams would die to have 2 good QBs. It's exactly what you want and should not cause a controversy. It's different if the starter is playing poorly and the backup is playing well, BUT Cutler is playing very well. He's having the best season of his career, although slowed down by the injury. So the Bears have an ideal situation to have a good starter and good backup. Marc Trestman did the right thing in not causing a QB controversy. Cutler rewarded his decision with a good road performance today.

Cutler was 11 of 12 for 151 yards on 3rd down today. CLUTCH. He's also the 8th ranked QB in the NFL in total QBR for the season. God Bless...

I'm a Cutler fan, but total QBR is utter BS. I don't know why people still cite it.

A few years back, people on the 49ers' 4-letter forum were crowning Troy Smith the next franchise QB because he had a couple of good games. This is what all the McCown talk is like. This is a perfect example of how dubious NFL fans' reasoning is when it comes to football. It's short-sided & knee-jerky.

Anyone who thinks Josh friggn' McCown is better than Jay Cutler simply doesn't understand the game of football. It's as simple as that.

The question that this thread asks is which QB gives the Bears the best chance to win, not which QB is better or more talented. Seems to me that Cutler's most defining feature of his career so far has been to make plays that win games for the opposing team. Perhaps that's all behind him now.

Ok anyone who thinks Josh McCown gives the Bears a better chance of winning than Jay Cutler does simply doesn't understand the game of football. The notion is so ridiculous it's beyond me how it's even a subject of discussion.

Josh McCown is lucky to even have a BACKUP job in the NFL. He's worse than Fitzpatrick in Tennessee.

No question Cutler has the better arm, but he doesn't have as much between the ears as McCown. I have seen Cutler play some very good games, but he is about as Jeckyll and Hyde as they come. Plus, in the games I've watched closest (the ones against the Packers), he has only managed one win.

I don't think either QB can get a team a Super Bowl trophy, but I think the Bears would be smart to resign McCown, use the extra money to bring in free agents, and then draft a QB to develop. As a Packers fan, however, I hope they sign Cutler to a long-term $15 million/year contract.

Not really sure how you "understand the game of football" while ignoring Cutler's penchant throughout his career of making mistakes that keep his team from winning. Other than that he is awesome! LOL

No one is saying McCown is awesome. Cutler's just so mind-bogglingly football retarded that anyone who can kind of take care of the ball makes your team more competitive.

Cutler has the 3rd most 4th quarter game winning drives of any QB in the NFL since 2007. I also believe he's the top rated 4th quarter QB this season. These stats say he's clutch, not a guy that can't win.

And yet Mike Shanahan and Marc Trestman (2 top offensive minds) say that Cutler has unusually high football intelligence. I'll take their word over yours.

Take one guess who has the highest passer rating in the NFL in the 4th quarter this season. I'll wait...

Since the day Cutler arrived in Chicago, he's had one of the worst supporting casts in football. His OL was so bad he barely ever threw the ball without a defender within arms reach of him. Now that he has decent receivers and maybe 2 good OL he's playing great again. Give that guy an OL and he'll be an MVP candidate.

And we're comparing him to JOSH FREEKING MCCOWN HERE! Cutler would have a better chance of winning with his left arm cut off than Josh McCown does on his best day. This is one of the stupidest comparisons I've ever seen.

Cutler > Matt Ryan, Matt Stafford, Colin Kaepernick & Cam Newton.

Josh Mccown < Matt Cassell, Christian Ponder, Brandon Weeden, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jason Campbell & Matt Schaub.

For once, Id like to see some actual proof of this. Isnt it odd that those that make this outdated, moronic claim cant back it up with anything tangible.

And youre just mind-bogglingly retarded. Period.

What Tebowfan said. I cant tell you the number of players Ive heard- the ones who attend the same meetings with Jay that say he is by far the smartest one in the room.

Cutler > Matt Ryan > Matt Schaub > Sam Bradford > Alex Smith > Ryan Fitzpatrick > Christian Ponder > Matt Cassel > Josh McCown > Brandon Weeden > Terrell Pryor > Tim Tebow > Josh Freeman > Blaine Gabbert.

Alex Smith is at a different level than Cutler right now. And the rest of those guys are basically backups or third string or not in the NFL.

Cutler has such a strong arm that he sometimes takes chances and forces balls into tight windows. Often it works out, but sometimes it backfires. Just because a player decides to take a chance doesn't mean he's football stupid. It jus means he likes to gamble sometimes to make big plays. It' not like Cutler gets picks because he misreads the defense. Now Jake Plummer, he was football stupid. He could not read the defense and Shanahan had to dumb down the offense for Plummer. Cutler is smart enough to run a complex offense and he does. Everyone around him says he's super smart. This guy that keeps claiming Cutler's stupid has NO CLUE what he's talking about!

You're right. A much, much, MUCH lower level than Cutler.

Alex is perfect for handing the ball off, throwing short passes & not throwing picks. But as the world's foremost authority on Alex Smith, all I can say is I'm EXTREMELY happy I never have to look at him in a 49ers' uniform on 3rd & 7 again because the guy can't throw it 7 yards.

Eh, you might be less of an authority on a number of subjects than you seem to think you are. Can you definitively say, for example, that Kaepernik gives SF a better chance to win than does Smith?
