Over winter break I will attempt to devise some evaluation similar to the one I devised for goalies last year and for free agents over the summer. I hope I'm successful. For now, the sample sizes are too small to determine whether or not the rates are sustainable.

Shouldn't we wait until at least game 41 before we start complaining about awards that players may or may not win??? A lot can happen in a short amount of time.

Just sayin'.

Yep, and we have A LOT of games to go. Wasn't Crosby significantly behind OV/Sedin in points and Stamkos/OV in goals going into the last dozen or so games last year? Not even a third of the way through the season, injuries that can happen, hot streaks from top contenders, etc. A long way to go...

Eh...give me a break. We do the POTY challenge before any games are played and there are tons of threads about speculation.

I don't think leaving the swamp means never talking about Crosby or Ovechkin. I think the goal was to drop the retarded lack of common sense or semblance of objectivity that permeated those threads, and the hijacking of neutral topics.

We shouldn't be tip-toeing around Crosby's or Ovechkin's name. If it gets out of hand, we have mods that I trust to deal with it. But there's been a disturbing lack of trash-talking on this board for such a lively topic. Let's keep it reasonable, but not castrated.

I mean, basically Loki has just said that she thinks Crosby will have an MVP-worthy season, but will get unfairly overlooked because Stamkos is the new kid on the block. She also thinks Stamkos benefits greatly, compared to Sid, by playing with St-Louis instead of Dupuis.

Those are both reasonable discussion points.

Yes, they're about speculation...They're not about throwing out the "woe is me" if my guy doesn't win.

Please provide a detailed list of what I am and am not allowed to post about. For example, I wanted to make a thread asking for rep points. I know this adds a lot more to a hockey forum than bringing up reasons why Sidney Crosby should win the Hart, but I would like to make sure.

Right now Pittsburgh is 15-8-2 through 25 games, in a more top heavy division. Philly is playing well, the Rangers are in the hunt, but the Isles and Devils have been garbage thus far. Tampa is 13-8-3 through 24 games, in a more balanced division... Washington is quietly the number one team in the league, and Atlanta and Carolina are both in the playoff picture.

Pittsburgh has a +15 goal differential, they have scored only three more goals than TB this year but have allowed 17 fewer. That's going to come with a more mature, "been there seen that" kind of team. They have had some turnover since they last won the Cup, but the core is the same and the team seems to be playing a more complete defensive game. Tampa had a lot of roster movement over the off season with Yzerman taking the helm, and it takes time to get a new coach and a bunch of new players on the same page.

Both teams looks about equal in terms of overall talent, or at least pretty damn close. Tampa has had to deal with a new coach, new system, new GM, and new players, while Pittsburgh has had injuries and slumps to manage. Staal has been out, Michalek and Orpik have missed time, and I heard Paul Woods on the radio today saying that Malkin has been battling knee injuries all year. I don't know if this is true, or if Paul Uh Woods uh needs uh to uh check uh his sour uh ces a little uh better, but it would explain some things.

Right now Stamkos has scored 28% of his team's goals, and has been in on 53% of them.

Crosby has scored 23% of his team's goals, and has been in on 52% of them.

Those raw numbers give Stamkos an edge, but as was pointed out there is a huge gap between Crosby's point totals and the next closest players. Stamkos has St. Louis on his wing and next to him on the scoring charts. There is some evidence of St. Louis doing a little Rucchining off of Stamkos, he's on pace for 98 points and scored 94 last year after two 80 point campaigns... most players don't get a jump like that towards the end of their careers, so I think it's obvious Stamkos is contributing to that.

Obviously St. Louis is a great player and a great playmaker, and he's ten times the player that Dupuis or Chris "careful with that last name" Kunitiz will ever be, I'm not making that argument.

But I think right now the numbers and situations are so close that it's just a matter of opinion at this point. I can see the argument that Stamkos is getting all the consideration because everyone loves a new toy, but I think if you removed both those players from their respective teams the Pens would still be in the playoffs, while the Lightning would be dropping like a rock.

Stamkos is putting up a higher percentage of his team's numbers, on a team that desperately needs the offense (shaky goaltending is a killer).

Interesting thread.... No doubt it seems to be a 3 horse race right now (mainly because you gotta figure Ovie is gonna catch fire anyway).. But speaking strictly as a Pens fan who has seen it before, Malkin would catch fire potentially if Crosby went down w/ an injury, and Staal hasn't seen 1 minute of play yet.

That said, I'm very impressed w/ Sid.. But more impressed w/ the #1 ranked PK in the league that is playing w/o their best PKiller. I might have gone a bit off-track, but I figured I'd drop a cent or 2 in on this good thread.

I think Sid can continue on his pace (tough start to the year) and I think Stamkos can also. But EVERYTHING is subject to change in this league because of the looming injury that will occur.

I wonder if they still plan on putting Malkin on Staal's wing?
