Well, he has exactly three more goals than Sid right now. If they stayed on similar paces (unlikely) and that gap was the same, Sid should still win it. Stamkos is not more valuable to the Lightning than Sid is to the Penguins, especially when Malkin's point total matches Kris Letang's.

I agree Sid has been the most valuable player to his team thus far this year. He has an 18 point led on his all star teammate. That's unreal. I even picked him as the Hart winner in the quarterly awards thread.


That said...

Stamkos is on pace for 75 goals and 135 points, compared to Sid's pace of 59 and 131. I couldn't be pissed if they gave it to Stamkos. 75 goals would be an amazing feat.

That said...

I doubt either player keeps up that pace throughout the season. And I wouldn't rule out the douche in Washington either. Although he hasn't even been the best player on his team this season . Tim Thomas should even get a look if he finishes with a GAA under 1.50 and a Sv% over .950.

If Stamkos hit 75 goals and nobody else had over 60, it'd be crazy not to give it to him. But his shooting percentage right now is sitting at 24% which I think will be hard to keep up.

For Sid, the really exciting thing is that he's starting out strong for once. And what has really shocked me is his defensive game. We saw it getting better last year, but this is the first time it's really noticeable.

Maybe he just needed an off-season to rest? Who knows, but the kid is on fire.

I think it's way too early to say. Right now I'd probably give it to Sid but I don't think you appreciate what Stamkos is doing. If not for him then I doubt the Lightning's record would be half as good as it is right now.

When OV won, he ha 10 more goals than any other player and was the only guy to hit 50. He also scored at a higher rate than Malkin. And Crosby was #3 in scoring despite missing 5 games so it was a harder case for Malkin to be "more valuable" on his team than for OV.

When Sedin won, OV and Sid were just 2 of 3 guys to hit 50. OV had Semin on his team, who hit 40 goals, and Backstrom sitting at #4 in scoring. Sid still had last year's runner up, Malkin, holding down that "value" to team aspect too.

Not that this matters... but Sid leads the league in even strength points with 26. Stamkos next with 19. Stamkos leads the league in PP points, with 20 (counting the game against the panthers) where he gets over 50% of his points.
