Its a complete fallacy to even say there wasa lack of fan support in winnipeg and quebec city...

The issue was financial ... Paying players is us dollars while collecting revenue in cdn dollar

If anything corporate support was questionable and still could be but they already lost there team once and I think the entire winnipeg populace would jump on board to not let it happen again

Afterall this is a hockey market ... Not a shit market like atlanta

Why didnty anyone ask "what's changed ?" Before they decided to expand to atlanta

Winnpieg will have a team by the start of 2011-12 season

All your points are valid. I never said that the fans weren't there, I was just asking for some enlightenment on the situation from then until now. I also new that part of it was financial, just wasn't aware of the market of Canadian dollar vs Us dollar then or now..

I agree, somebody should have asked the same thing about Atlanta, and Colorado.. Although Colorado has done much better.:humble:

I would move the Trashers to Ontario and the Panthers to Winnipeg. Then, i would realign the Detroit Red Wings to the Eastern Conference, placing them in the NE division, while moving NJ to the SE.

(this is purely hypothetical, don't get pissed if you don't like where I put your team:heh:)

Screaming babies at 5:00 am suck:ballchain:

Technically, Columbus is further East.

I'd be careful with expansion. There's already too many. For US Markets, I think Kansas City is a good one. I'd be hesitant for Seattle. There's money there, but it is really close to Vancouver. Not sure how it would pull from there.

I am very seriously against Vegas. There is no real stable population there to grow the game. It would essentially turn the NHL into a Penn and Teller or Celine Dion type sideshow for people who want a few minutes away from the Seafood Buffet. Plus, the last thing any professional sport wants is to be deeply associated with the corruption surrounding Gambling.

Well this is to be expected, it wasn't that way all year.. They are another team in need of new Ownership, so yea it remains to be seen where they go from here.

I've often wondered if the Jets would have gone to Denver and the Nords to Phoenix if the situation would be flipped.

i think it was a combination of a smaller market and the exchange rate.. when i looked it up a while back (same concerns you had) i was pretty convinced that they could try again.. but the exchange rate hurt them at the ticket booth, and the smaller market made it more difficult when it came to ratings, and that hurt the advertisement money

i believe winnepeg was like top 10 in attendance when they moved? if i'm not mistaken?

for me.

phoenix goes back to winnepeg
florida goes to green bay/seattle
atlanta goes to london, ontario (i dont like quebec and their frenchiness :))

divisions would need realigned, and i think they should move away from conferences, go on divisions, and have a 16 seed tournament, instead of 2 8 seeds..

divisions:

Clarke division
:peace:
flyers
pens
caps
rangers
isles
devils

Howe Division
leafs
bruins
thrashers (london)
habs
sens
sabres

Orr Division
wings
coyotes (winnepeg)
hawks
panthers (GB)
wild
avs

Gretzky Division

blues
preds
bolts
stars
canes
jackets

Richard Division
nucks
flames
oilers
kings
ducks
sharks

top 2 in each division go, with the top 5 seeds being the division winners.. final 6 spots are 'wild cards'

if the nhl has learned anything ... they wont put winnipeg in a division that doesnt include van,cal or edm ... all about the rivalries ... the old smythe division

it also measn less travel for all 3 western cdn cities

I like this idea, alot. I like the divisions, except I think it should be someone who was on one of the teams in the division. But overall, Id support this

5 divisions? So no more conferences then? So the Stanley Cup could be between 2 teams in the same division? I'd have to mull that over.

Well, there is no better marketing plan that a winning team, and Denver was treated to that right from the get-go. Meanwhile, Phoenix inherited a team that really hasn't done much of anything since arriving in the desert. I know there are several other factors to consider, but if the Coyotes had at least had a couple of playoff runs early in the Phoenix days, it would have made a considerable difference in their financial fortunes, in my opinion.

Oh yes, totally agreed, I would like to think it would have stuck here in that scenerio but I'm not sure.. There actually is a die hard fan base here, it's just that it doesn't seem that way at times. I think Colorado is a hard place to sustain a team in lean years cause everything is so expensive, Plus they have been lucky enough to have a surplus of different teams that have all been doing relatively well, so the sports markets here flucuate more often to which team is doing well at the time.

I am fine with 30 teams.

I'd move Atlanta. Phoenix, and Florida to Winnipeg, Quebec City, and Hamilton.

i was just dicking around with the division names haha.. i didn't think it would be nice to give a team the name of the division, hence orr not being bruins, etc.

as far as winnepeg goes.. i was focused more on location.. and if you move winnepeg to the 'pacific' division.. then you get kinda messy with the closeness

I'd have the Panthers move to Quebec and the Coyotes move to Winnipeg. I'd take the Thrashers and move them to Milwaukee.

The Red Wings move to the Eastern Conference to make the conferences even.

On a scheduling note, I'd make the schedule more like that of MLB. Teams in the same division would play 3 game series, all in the same town. Teams in the same conference would have 2 game sets, one in each city. I love the intensity that back to backs create. The media having two teams in the same city for 5-7 days would create a great buzz. Travel for the two conferences would be more even. The league saves money.

Not that I would want to see Detroit in the east or the devils in the se but it would be interesting to see how the devils would compete in the se.would like to see more teams in Canada and I really think Wisconsin would be a great market with potential rivalries already in place .

I fully agree that Wisconsin deserves an NHL team, but do you think Milwaukee would really work? A smallish city already close to a large market (Chicago).

1) That's a good point, but yes I do think that 17,000 people would go to games in Milwaukee rather than drive a couple of hours to Chicago for a game.

2) I'm not THAT familiar with Wisconsin, but if the team weren't in Milwaukee, where else would be a good option?
