Five reasons the Washington Redskins might not live up to expectations

there are some points here that are valid . some will come to pass others will fall in our favor

a lot depends on Smith . . i expect he will be what he has been most of his career . a decent qb who wont lose games for you but wont necessarily win them either . that isnt a bad thing if we have built up our team around him enough

they talk about age to key players but 30 years old shouldnt be a killer , 34 at qb , maybe not so much either

mostly our unproven young talent needs to step up and we need to hope we hit with richardson in FA

our draft is being hyped and this draft needs to live up to most of it . missing on guice or payne would be devastating and quinn needs to live up to the press clippings . that being said i think we hit on most of the picks

not trying to go debbie downer here just keeping it semi real

I will just pick at the article. To say our weapons are just as good as what Alex Smith had in KC is laughable.

Jordan Reed had a singular great year and is our best weapon if he can get to that. There is no reason to think he can or will be that player. So to say he is just as good as Kelce is an insult to the highest order.

Tyreek Hill was an absolute phenomenal last season. To think that our pass catchers will be able to do what he did when neither has reached 800 yards in a season is a wet dream. At least comparing Reed to Kelce had a single year of validity.

The one place where we may be just as good is RB with Guice. Guice was a much higher commodity than Hunt but to expect a duplicate rookie performance may be a bit much.

Like the article said, and I have reiterated over and over, is Alex Smith has had exactly one good year, an outlier. Our fate likely lies with him. If his most recent season is a true indicator of who he is, even then I expect less success because I do not believe our supporting cast is good enough.

All these factors, plus a very tough schedule, are the reasons I say 6 wins.

What injured player already lost for the season does he mean?

He is putting a whole lot on a group of pass catchers who between all of them put together. Might equal up to 2 or 3 good seasons for a single WR. Boy I'm interested to see what Richardson can do. This is like the 3rd time I've read about his killer contested catching ability.

I to believe Smith has to play more like last year as opposed to the way he's played most of his career if this team is to have a successful season. Hopefully Smith Trends like Rich Gannon did late in his career.

I'm not worried about our winning qb. jordan reed, well i've been concerned about him being available to play on game day every season since 2015...kid is just always hurt...don't see that ever changing.

What is the bet?

I may change the win total. A lot can happen between now and game 1. I am intelligent enough not to make a final prediction until all the facts are set.

Yes. IF you were capable of reading a sentence or statement in its entirety, then you would remember I said with the current roster.

skinsdad, Great topic you started for all of us skins fans to discuss!

I'm an ole guy who has loved the skins since Eddie LeBaron was their QB. Before the beginning of every season I get pumped with high hopes only to get disappointed at season's end many more times than not. I think much of our current problem starts at the top with a terrible owner. I'm sure you know but I can't count the head coaches and GMs we've had since he bought the team and this has created a stability problem for years. I really thought we finally might have something going on special when RG III came on the scene a few years ago but how did that work out for us? Now I'm hyped about the draft choices we just made but it remains to be seen how that will work out for us. I cheered hard for Cousins but I was never sold on him because he seemed to get picked way to often at just the wrong time during a game. I'll be cheering hard for Smith too because he will be the leader of MY TEAM. I hope we will be able to keep this thread going because I'm sure there will be a lot more that I would like to say as we get into pre-season.

Hail to the Redskins!

I'll bet you that the Skins do not win a SB with Alex Smith...

I mean shouldnt that be every NFLs team goal to win a superbowl?

If they didnt believe in Cousins, though I think they are wrong, I could at least see and understand the logic if they drafted a QB early.

Not believing in Cousins, then trading for a 34 y/o QB who has never even come close to sniffing a SB with far superior teams to me is settling..... and that is disgraceful IMO

Great topic and an interesting, if overly optimistic article.

Smith won't be a big issue imo. Ever since Smith was acquired, I've said that the Skins weapons fit him well b/c he excels at throwing to TEs and RBs and he's great throwing up the same and over the middle. He'll have fewer bone head TOs than Cousins, but he won't make as many big plays. OTOH, I believe anyone expecting him to throw for 4,000yds will be disappointed.

Imo, the biggest reason the Skins could fall short is the defense. Last year, the Skins were bottom 3rd of the league in points allowed and yards allowed. You didn't have a lot of close losses last year. If that D doesn't significantly improve, it will be the biggest reason the Skins struggle this year.

Really? Talk about a non factor. If the guy were healthy his chances of making the team would be marginal & he is not a difference maker. Also - off season injures happen to all teams - you just deal w/ it & just hope that it isn't to one of your stars.

Well the D is actually an area where the team could improve significantly . Don't get me wrong - I am not stating that this will vault them to a high level or result in a deep playoff run. However they might have more weapons on D that have a good shot of stopping the run which was a huge issue last season.

They ranked dead last in the NFL in rushing D last season (almost 900 yds more allowed then the Eagles who were #1 in this area). Assuming health - teaming up Payne w/ Allen & some others should do wonders in this area. We will see.

SoCal, You make some great points concerning the Redskins defense but as you said "we will see". Something else that I hope we will see is better game management on offense from Smith than we saw from Cousins by consistently moving the chains, eating up the clock on offense, and keeping the defense off the field more. I'm excited about our draft picks but we will see.
