The baseball world is waiting for him to sign, so the rest of the pitchers can gauge their value. A lot of big signings are still to be made, like cobb and Arrieta. This might even lead to a trade of archer and Colome. Everyone is waiting on Darvish to set the value.

Never seen anything like this. Pitchers and catchers report in a little more than 2 weeks and so many unsigned FA out there. Some teams are going to get themselves some bargains this week.

I'm still trying to figure out how Darvish is the number 1 target on the market . His career numbers aren't as good as Arrieta, his 2017 wasn't as good as Arrieta and he's not better in the postseason . All that could be explained away if Darvish were younger but they're both 31. Why any team would value him over Arrieta is baffling to me

Arrieta has some question marks himself. His walk rates over the last two years are much higher than they were in 2014-15, he's led the NL two years in a row in wild pitches, and he's struggling to make it past the 6th inning. He's gone from throwing 229 innings in 33 starts to just 168.1 innings in 30 starts last year. His FIP/xFIP have also gone from below 3.00 in 2015 to above 4.00 in 2017.

That's debatable. Arrieta's ERA is 0.15 runs lower despite pitching in a more difficult ballpark and facing a DH. He beats Arrieta in career ERA+ 126 to 114. Arrieta has a slightly lower WHIP, but Darvish has elite strikeout rates. Arrieta's been better at preventing home runs (though some of that could be attributed to Darvish pitching in Arlington), but he's seen his home run rate spike up to 1.2 HR/9 in 2017. Arrieta's only got 1-2 more WAR (1 per BB-Ref, 2 per Fangraphs) than Darvish despite there being a 329 inning gap.

Even if you think the 2 are about equal ( which I think is a best case for Darvish ) it makes little sense that he's getting so much more respect this off-season. Guy seems like he's hurt a lot too but that may just be my perception

He is also very prone to blow-up outings. At least, he was this past season. With both Texas and LA.

Darvish and all of the other FA's may be getting offers much shorter term than they expected.

my best guess is that we are going to see these guys getting the per-year value they expected, just on shorter terms. Too many teams have been burned by contracts that are too long.

i have a feeling the previous 6 year/$120 mill contracts are now being offered as 4 year/$80 mill and the players are waiting to see if the teams budge.
