Hate it. Troy is right. If you're going to do it, do it like they used to do the facemask penalty. Incidental contract a 5 or 10 yard penalty, Actual intentional interference is a spot foul.

Aproximate lose of points per game based on their 2017 yards lost and yards per point metrics

Lot of fast and loose assumptions, but good to look at:

Pitt: .54
NE: .54
PHI: .48
Minn: .39
Oak: .32
HOU: .36
DET: .42
DAL: .31
LAC: .26
LAR: .33
AZ: .21
MIA: .19
GB: .20
CAR: .19
IND: .14
WSH: .16
Den: .13
CLE: .10
BUF: .11
JAX: .13
SEA: .08
TB: .10
BAL: .11
SF: .07
ATL: .07
NYG: .05
CIN: .05
NYJ: .05
CHI: .02
KC: .02
Tenn: .02
NO: .00

If we assumed the game is played the same (it won't) with a theoretical DPI change, this would be the result. Points lost a game relative to their yards per point metrics (another fast and loose assumption)

Not really for or against it. In a league where penalties always favor the offense, seems like a justifiable move. But I don't want to see DBs abuse that penalty to alter the outcome of a game.

I wish it could be as easy as just hiring more competent referees...

I think the NFL loves offense too much to make the change.

Changing the rule would be asinine. Why does anyone think this is a good idea? If I'm a DB and you run by me I tackle you every single time if it's only a 15 yard penalty and if you get position on me down field I tackle you before you can catch the ball. Intentionally interfering to prevent a 40 yard gain should be a 40 yard penalty. How is anything else even close to fair?

Also, what about PI in the end zone on a red zone play? Does it become half the distance instead of ball at the 1? If so, again I tackle the receiver every time he has position in front of me when the ball is on the way.

The problem is the refs calling interference so often and incorrectly, not the yardage given for the penalty.

Thats the key, the league is protecting itself from terrible officiating

id say too often a PI in the end zone that essentially hands a team a TD, that pass wasnt going to be caught either way, far too many times we watch that

Need a flagrant version that is a spot foul. This isn't hard. But they're going to fuck it up somehow. Someone needs to show these guys some 49er games with Chip Kelly.

"Let the kids play." When in doubt don't call it. Lord knows it can't be PI every single time Brady over throws one of his receivers.

Im with that all day every day, I dont think "judgement" should be ruled out for officials...I think "uncatchable" should be instituted farrrr more than it is in the NFL

How many times i sit there on Sunday and see a team gifted 35-40 yards on a PI that was never going to be a catch

Until they know conclusively what a catch is they need not fuck with what is obvious, they can fuck that up at a later date.

Well, you would have to set limits in a new rule to avoid obvious abuse. Spot foul would only apply if:
  • Blatant tackle from behind or front; or the defender wraps around arms, body or legs
  • More than one obvious tackle per game by defender, he is immediately expelled from the game and fined
IMO, all the other marginal stuff should not be automatic spot foul.
