I never really understood the whol "bandwagon" thing....you're either a fan or you're not...you either care or you don't...who cares how long somebody has been watching....if it takes a couple of good years...or even 1 good year....to attract a new fan to the sport, then so be it.....

youre on to something ... the opposite of love isnt hate, its apathy ... when people dont care for a period of time because a team struggles, thats my defin. of a bandwagon city

like boss says, in canada and some US cities, there is passion in each market and when the team is shitting the bed, the fans will want their pound of flesh ... when the canucks (for example) are struggling, radio ratings for the all sports radio station go up ... because average joe out there still follows along and thinks he has the answer ... he/she may stop paying for the horseshit product but he/she still cares and dies a little bit with each loss

That's tough to say... Michigan supports an NHL team, several AHL and IHL teams, two OHL teams, half the CCHA, and countless other high school and college programs... however there's no doubt that there was a period in time when lots of newer NHL fans gravitated to the Wings. I'd say 40%, but we still have more diehards than most teams have total support.

I personally don't care. Some people only kind of watch/like hockey. I watch maybe three or four football games a year. The Super Bowl, and a few Michigan and MSU games. I'm sure there are tons of people out there who just watch NHL playoffs.

I'd say Ottawa's is 50% bandwagoners which is pretty sad considering it's a Canadian team. And I'd even say 50% is being generous...

Exactly but I will say it has gotten slightly better recently with the younger generation in Ottawa who grew up with the team.

Still, it's pretty weak compared to other Canadian cities.

If we're defining bandwagon as I define it (people who pretend they know everything about the team, but really just watch when someone else turns it on...), the Pens are probably around 30-40%. Mostly because my demographic is where they all are...teenage girls.

This was the definition of Washington Capitals hockey in the mid to late 90's. Wow, was it tough to go to games there. especially when Philly, Pittsburg on the Rangers came to town.

That has really changed though. Partially because all other DC sports teams are unwatchable.

Here in Columbus, if you define "bandwagon" as "people who start paying attention when the Bowl Games and indictments are over" then it's around 40%. It's not that they are not hockey fans or don't know the game, they just clearly love the other child more.

Sellout tonight against the Oil. They were getting 10k during football season against the Sharks. It's a bit odd, but this is a hockey town. Viewing parties for away games. Youth and rec hockey is huge. More than a hundred are showing up to watch practice regularly. I was a High School game on friday night that was standing room only.

I feel for ya. The only bad part about a team coming back to life in their market (ala the Pens, Caps, Hawks, etc.) is that the richies who could CARE LESS a few years ago suddenly care and buy every ticket imaginable to drive up the price, and then end up missing 75% of the games and reselling their tickets for 3x face value. Crooked system.

To be honest, Wings probably is at about 20%. They've been so good for so long, I'm guessing a stretch of a few years missing the playoffs would literally see that many drop off.

The younger crowd has moved to the Tigers. Even when they are mediocre, a Tiger game is cheaper and people love to sit outdoors and drink.
