There was a nice article on this somewhere a couple of days back, but now I can't find the link anywhere :L

Anyway, honest opinion, how many of your favourite team's fans would you consider to be "bandwagon"? In Toronto's case, I would say the Leafs are at 5-10%, considering the fact this club has been hopeless for years now and they still sell out. However there is that percentage that just like to cheer for them because A) everyone else does or B)for and outlet of their anger

Try to be honest with your answer, none of that "We were just protesting the ownership" crap other fans use and excuse for low attendance.

I agree with you about the Leafs, very die hard fans and always support them. Kudos to the Leafs fans.

In all honesty I think Buffalo's percentage is low, we don't have the population Toronto does but the Sabres generally get good support through the good and bad times. Hard to put a percentage on it but maybe 10 to 15 % ? They have a decent waiting list for season tickets.

Just a guess.

tough to say for Vancouver fans. I know we can be a somewhat of an annoying bunch to others (no, really), but there was still strong support in some very, very dark years.
(ie. the 1970s, most of the 1980's, the messier years, and throughout the recent playoff wall).

But there are an assload of new Kesler jerseys on the streets, as there was last year with Burrows jerseys.
don't know if these people have a closet full of alternating jerseys, or if they just pick who is hot at the time.

in terms of people at the games or watching in the bar maybe 20%?
for the average joe on the street, I dunno.... 40%? More interest now than pre-WCE days, but I think you will hear more Canuck fans waiting for the shoe to drop than planning a parade route.

it's a somewhat undefineable number, as "bandwagonocity" is a sliding scale.

BWF - as you are in the city too (as a *spits* Leaf fan), I'd be interested in your perspective

There are a bunch of Devils "fans" at my work (in so cal). They love Kovy and Brodeur and Parise and Lou and that's the last name they know. By the way how are they doing this year? :L

Puckhead, I think you're being a bit tough on the Canucks fans. As far as I remember they seem to get great support, at least the attendance numbers would indicate that.

You comment that "it's a somewhat undefineable number, as "bandwagonocity" is a sliding scale" true. It's tough to put a number on it.

I think it's safe to say that the Canadian teams have less bandwagon fans because they are so passionate about the sport.

There are some good fans in a lot of US Cities but not to the exstent of the Canadian cities.

BTW. Good topic Blue!

I never really understood the whol "bandwagon" thing....you're either a fan or you're not...you either care or you don't...who cares how long somebody has been watching....if it takes a couple of good years...or even 1 good year....to attract a new fan to the sport, then so be it.....

Ok for LA there are a few. The Kings have always drawn about 16K a game now it is been 17-18 after last year. With the Dec-Jan slump many have fallen off. The news has been giving scores this year so at least the are talked about a little. most years the local news doesn't give a score or show a vid ever.

I'm trying to be as conservative (overestimate) as possible. There are a ton of die hard fans, enough to sell the building out for years on end, a waiting list for season tickets, etc. But, you know.... the amount of Nuck t-shirts and jerseys in the malls is increasing over the years. Do they love the game, or is it a fashion statement? I dunno.

btw, I was fairly hard on Flames fans for gaining bandwaggoners after their most recent cup run (the Red Mile days). It seemed everyone in that town who had a flames jersey.... it just happened to be the brand new jersey that was released that season.

Well I have been to bars and sports places during Canucks games in the past. I'd say that out of every 10 of them wearing Canucks jerseys I talk to, about 2 of them have hardly any idea who plays for Vancouver or any facts about past seasons. Going by that, I'd guess Vancouver is about 15-20% bandwagon.
