It seems to me that the powers that be at the university don't really care. Or is it that the powers that be are inept and keep making one bumbling move after another?

I am beginning to become worried...

Ignorance is this biggest thing holding this program back.

The people in charge and many of the fans believe that being "Nebraska" is enough to compete in this world of College Football.

It's simply not true- You are not going to compete at a high level consistently with average recruits. You are not going to get high level recruits to come to Nebraska without either A. Cheating or B. Big Name coaches who can develop talent- this includes assistants.

Nebraska has the ability to open the check book- Nebraska is to arrogant or ignorant to do so.

Alabama is who Alabama is now because they opened the check book- Not because they are "Alabama".

Coaching/recruiting, idk if we have either yet. MR and Boyd set off to a complete tear down with the team and AD which was needed, peaked after the purdue debacle then they started some rebuilding from the ground up. If we're still meddling at .500 next year the warning bells will be ringing loudly for me but at this point I'm not worried whatsoever. Recruiting on the other hand is really on the table right now

Regarding recruiting, I saw somewhere that we are ranked behind Maryland, MARYLAND!, in the B1G...

We really fell of the map in recruiting right after the Byu loss, thats not a coincidence. I'm hide and watch till signing day and see how it plays out, just signing a full class would be an improvement from the last 7 yrs

pretty sure it is partially due to having Top300 players in their back yard. heck of a lot easier to build a team when you have the players within a stone's throw of the school.

I dislike the excuses about so-and-so team doing well "because of the talent they have in their backyard". It's an epic copout.

There are more teams with the same talent in their backyard that don't do well.

Saban went (7-6) in his first season at Bama with "all that talent in his backyard". He installed his system and in year 2 went (12-2), but lost to mid-major Utah in the Sugar Bowl. By year 3 he had things coached up to win the NC and the elite talent started rolling in.

Michigan was shit under Hoke with "all that talent in their backyard". Harbaugh has coached them up to be somewhat successful this past season.

Strong has 'all that talent in his backyard" yet look at the shit pile that are the donghorns.

There are multiple examples of teams under-achieving with "all that talent in their backyard" Georgia, Florida, Penn St, yada yada.

It's COACHING!!! It's getting players put in the right places and getting them to understand what you're trying to do. Getting them to buy in to what you're wanting them to do. It's playing smart. It's turning 3 stars into 4 stars instead of 4 stars into 3 stars, or 3 stars into 2 stars.

Coach the kids up and give the impression to recruits that they will have success where they are going.

Once you can sell success, the recruits will line up.

It was easy to recruit against Bopleeny. After Riley's first year it will be easy to recruit against him too. Riley needs to take year two and show he can have success with what he's got. He needs to develop his 3 stars into 4 stars. Penalties, turnovers, and lack of execution are a sign of bad coaching. No kid or parent want's any of that unless it's the 'best of the rest' offer. That is what Nebraska's been getting for years now.
The best of the mid-major type talent and not coaching it up.

And that brings us back to my original question. The coffers are full in Lincoln. Why do the powers that be keep rolling the dice with these coaching hires? And I understand that it was a different AD each time, but why doesn't the chancellor or U. Pres. "strongly suggest" an established, successful, big name hire?

One simple answer... Because they are morons! Nebraska CAN attract a top notch coach with the proper money thrown at them. Also, a top notch coach that is very successful CAN attract really talented players here. Despite this, we may not ever see a run like Osborne had in the nineties, but I bet we would see some championship level teams that can compete for conference championships, and win some of those too. Also, a NC may even come our way if all of stars line up right.

The Strength and Conditioning program was destroyed with the Dumbest Coach in America. I don't think Pelini ever really got it either with Strength and Conditioning. The one thing I will give Riley credit for is that fact it appears he's put more emphasis on Strength and Conditioning and listening to Epley. Time will tell. But the Strength and Conditioning program is the life blood of any college football program and Nebraska needs to make this priority number one.

Because there are only 2 sure things IMO and they are both employed. Saban and Meyer. Anybody else is a gamble for anything more than $3 million.

Eichorst made that point when he hired Riley. There are plenty of coaches out there making $4 million+, but aren't bringing home championships.

I wouldn't have hired Riley, but it is what it is. We can only wait and see if he can clean up the penalties, the turnovers, get everybody on the same page buying into what he wants them to do, and play smart.

If they start playing better, stop looking like a low end P5 or a mid-major, the recruiting will get better.

Janovich sure was underused last season. I remember Osborne saying one time that play calling was overrated. Actually, better play calling would have resulted in at least two more wins in 2015. An 8-5 record would have been good considering all of the problems that they had to overcome.

I can relate this question to what happened to one of the best college basketball program that existed in modern era, minus UCLA.

The Indiana Hoosiers were a top program for 20+ years, such as the Huskers. The reason, was the head coach, which demanded that the best players and support from admin to run "HIS" program, they called all the shots. The coaches that demand that respect is few and far between; Saban, krzyzewski maybe Meyer?

Osborn had that and it will never be the same, period
