we didnt get consistent pass rush and turnovers were scarce . my question is the guy who got the sack strip fumble and recovery had a meager 12 plays out of 57

The defense played well overall, but, once again when we needed a stop, no one made a play. I don't know what it is, but there is no one on this defense that in crunch time steps up. We really haven't had a guy like that since Sean Taylor. Kerrigan didn't have a great game, thus the lack of pressure when we needed it. Just an overall lack of playmakers.

Hit the nail on the head here. They never seem to get a stop when they need one. As for the pass rush I've shared my concern all off season. Other than Hatcher and Kerrigan this team is really lacking a pass rush. Maybe it will be the rookie, it sure ain't Trent Murphy.

your are right about that no one even kerrigan can make the clutch play when we need a hold

Should of had 4 turn overs on Sunday. Two dropped int's and the fumble on Special Teams went right through one of our guys hands. The defense also stopped a 4th and 1 play. Im seeing good things.

Preston Smith and yeah, I read that as well far as him getting only 12 plays. He made as many plays, 2 tackles/1 sack, as Murphy did, 3 tackles, and Murphy started. I'd like to see Preston get more PT.

Far as Kerrigan, remember he didn't play at all this preseason. He may be a tad rusty still. He did get a half a sack though.

Far as turnovers, they were there to be had, but Skins players failed to cash in. Not including the youngsters, Breeland for example, or the new starters on defense reason being is I haven't seen them enough to get a feel for them. The only players we have capable of taking advantage of turnover opportunities when they present themselves are RK and Dhall. That's one reason I'd like to see Dhall on the field in some capacity, be it at safety or #3CB.

Were we all watching the same game?
10 points
256 total yards
3 sacks
1 TO and 2 blantant drops

I don't think any of us think we are going to scare the 85 Bears but that's not bad guys. I don't know that we are going to get that every week and don't think we will but that was a very good game by our D.

yeah, the ball control helped, but the D served up a win yesterday. Lots of experts had Miami being a very good offensive team this year and I thought the Skins would be in trouble if they got down big and had to be in obvious passing downs.

Can Trent Murphy covert to DE? He's a slug.

If the D holds the other team to 10 points you gotta find a way to win that game.

That one stat, 1 TO and 2 blatant drops, would look a lot better as, 3 TOs.

I agree though, that loss wasn't on the defense. I even think "the D couldn't get a stop when they needed too." talk is unfair. Only giving up 10 points, 256 total yards, holding a team to 41% or 5/12 on 3rd down and allowing the opposing offense only 22 minutes and 6 seconds of having the ball. Should equate to a win for the NFL team who's defense just did that.

One last thing about Kai. Kai not being able to kick a 53 yarder, which he's shown he can, is a whole lot different than your HC being too scared or not confident enough in Kai to kick a 53 yarder. Gruden's play-calling not too lose figured prominently into the Skins losing imo. At some point he's gonna have to let Cuz or whoever else, our FG kicker, WR, whoever it may be, go out there and try to make plays. Or the Skins might waste a whole bunch of damn good defensive efforts this year.

I agreed with all of your observations skinsdad, just frustrated that ST, and the O let us down. If the D is going to give that kind of performance every week, I'd take it. They did everything but pitch a shutout including holding the Dolphins after that bad turnover deep in our own end. Things they could improve on....yes, but I couldn't ask for more considering they were without Nacho and Breeland.

You have got to look at both sides of an issue gents, stats are wonderful and in some context have meaning. In sports the bottom line is the score. Pretty sure that Miami folks are saying that holding a team to 10 points should get a win and they would be right.

That said, it was a pretty decent defensive effort, my issues with all three aspects of the game is simply this. We've watched year after year and the refrain is always the same, somebody has to step up, somebody has to step up, somebody has to step up!!! Well what if there's no step up gear anywhere to be found on this team? Isn't it more likely than not that they are, to a man, exactly what the present themselves to be?

I think they are what the present themselves to be. There is no clear cut leader on this defense. I find it telling that the defense elected Gohlsen as the defensive captain. Second year in a row they have elected a first year guy. I love Kerrigan, Dhall, Keenan, etc, but they are not leaders. That's what we need. We need a leader to emerge, both on the field and in the locker room demanding excellence both through their own play and through holding teammates accountable.

Skinsdad - I thought that you of all people would realize that this is a long term process so folks need to be a little more patient. We are talking about predominately young guys who will mistakes including penalties, flubbed turnovers, etc. The key will be how they respond as the season progresses (& yes expect more mistakes in the weeks ahead).

Also - as you & others mention - they did only give up only 10 pts. Similar performances (w/ the occasional drubbings perhaps) will be a good sign. I have to chuckle when several folks here keep talking about turning over the roster and bringing in younger players yet they expect these younger players to be probowlers from day one. It doesn't work like that.

In hindsight there were a lot of positives last Sunday yet many (being fans I guess) simply want to look for the bad. As I mentioned previously - one of the real positives was Preston Smith and yes they need to get him on the field more. HTTR

NP - not trying to give you a hard time. I truly believe that P. Smith will step up as the season progresses. As for some of the other younger players they will need to step up & cut down on mistakes or risk their future with the team. Dropping a potential INT or incurring a few penalties is not that big of an issue if it occurs once or twice. However - repeatedly having these type of things occur is usually a sure fire way off the roster (especially if you are not a high pick).
