As of right now, Jesus Montero would be our starting first baseman.

Let's brainstorm some solutions and hope that the Mariners front office reads them and absorbs our collective wisdom.

"We've discussed trade candidates with teams around the league and surveyed free agents but not engaged in that market. It is still TBD."

I thought these were interesting comments by Dipoto today regards to our 1B opening...

I agree with you and I agree with Dipoto.
I love what he said. Caught it on my drive home.
Montero, "I am not willing to risk our season on 500+ AB from Montero"

Basically telling us he is giving Montero an opportunity against LH, but won't risk him with 300+ AB against RH's.

Freese, Napoli, Morneau, Alvarez, seem like the best free agent options.

As for trade options, what about Brandon Belt or Adam Lind?

Posey will likely move to 1B full time soon with Duffy at 3B. Don't know if they'd want Belt in LF or not.

I like Belt, but he gets hurt a lot it seems.

Well, we started with this:

1. Logan Morrison
2. Mark Trumbo
3. Jesus Montero

Now, we've sent 1 and 2 away, which would seem to be troublesome to most teams, losing your #1 and #2 1B, but, looking at those names and the production that came with them, I'm not seeing the huge dropoff from 1 & 2 to 3.

I do see an addition at 1B coming, be it Napoli, Morneau, Alvarez (I hope 0/3), but regardless, I don't feel 1B is a huge drop in production whomever we slot in there. It looks like 1B is Cano's spot after 2016 so I think we're gonna get a spot starter for this season while Dipoto continues to build his team.

Well when the 3rd guy on the list can't beat out the crap ahead of him, that doesn't say much for the 3rd guy.

Just comparing what we had to what we have;

Trumbo with M's: .263/13 HR's/ 41 RBI's in 334 AB's

Logan with M's: .225/17 HR's/54 RBI's in 457 AB's in 2015

Montero with M's: .217/9 HR's/30 RBI's in 230 AB's over last 3 years

Worth noting that over the final 74 games of the season, Trumbo hit 12 HRs with a .302/.358/.490 triple slash line.

Ya, that just supports my point even more. Not sure how giving Trumbo away made us better when we had no one to replace him. Now if he pulls a deal off for Belt (if healthy), Freeman, or Moreland, then the point of the trade for me is lost. I mean I am expecting us to sign Jose Vidro for 1B at any point this weekend.

I have to assume it was a money thing since we basically gave Trumbo away for free. That was highway robbery, the Os really capitalized on that opportunity.

I'm wondering if the Mariners are internally considering the idea of moving Cano to 1st. He wasn't his normal self at 2B defensively this year, I don't see why he couldn't rebound, but the Mariners may be considering that a backup option and perhaps moving Marte to 2B or something.

Not this year they said plus that would leave SS as a weakness offensively. They just need to increase payroll from $135-160M.

Wonder if Seth Smith could be a possibility at 1B? If not, maybe it'd make sense to try trading him for a 1B.

Seth Smith for Brandon Belt?

Or Maybe a 3 team trade to get Adam Lind from the Brewers for Smith?

I guess trading Smith for a RF would be an option, too.

I have a really hard time believing we are going to DH Cruz most of the year and tick him off. That is why I think we trade Smith and use Cruz in RF like last year and use Aoki and Guti in LF (they already said Aoki will get most of his starts in LF). I know that won't be great for defense, but your offensive MVP really wants to play the field and so do you risk it?

I was hoping Cruz's days in RF were over, but his batting numbers have always been lower when he's DHing for whatever reason.

So I guess that means Smith will be sharing DH/RF with Cruz since Aoki/Guti will be in LF?
