A 1974 Mercury Capri V6, purchased in May of 1975. $4200 after a $500 rebate.

They didn't make 1975 Capris and in 1976 went to the new Capri II look.

I had looked at one of those Mustang IIs with a 302 V8 but it was an automatic.

Never bought a new car/truck, but I want to participate here.

Probably already told this story here...anywhoze.

BEST DEAL I ever made for a vehicle was for a 62' Ford Country Sedan station wagon in college (early 80s). Room mate "borrowed an IZOD button down shirt" of mine and trashed it during a party night. I told him that was a $75 shirt and "restitution" was in order. He was graduating in a few weeks so he offered his families station wagon he drove in return. It was a 1 owner vehicle.

Mind you THIS POS was 16 feet long, had the 390 in it and wondered all over the road at 90 MPH, it's cruising groove. I told him cash was my first goal, but I would reluctantly accept the exchange of goods as compensation for his poor judgement the night before.

Turns out I drove that beast for 2 years, loved it and went camping in it everywhere. Sold it to the scrapers in the end for $75 bucks. Never had to put a dime in, cept for gas-n-oil.

HA!

My only new cars were 20 years apart. The Capri and then a 1995 Taurus SHO which I actually ordered and with luck will part with in 2 weeks.

Every other car I've owned has been used.

And the last one (my recently acquired MB S55 AMG) while 10 years old is by far the best of all of them and there's be no way on earth I could ever afford it new or even near new...

'89 Honda CRX (not the fuel miser or Si, just plain CRX)
Believe it was $11k but I paid an extra $1200 for AC to be installed (Dallas!) since it came from Japan without it...major ripoff. I was so pissed that I refused to let the dealer install overpriced audio and drove it away without even a radio...and I never had anything installed. And I LOVE music! Not a big adjustment because the '76 Nova my dad gave me as my first car only had AM.
Dealer was Lute Riley in Richardson, salesman was an asshole. I was so green I didn't even know to negotiate, but I was supposed to get a good deal because I financed with the TI credit union and they had a "relationship" with many of the local dealers...yeah, right, I got fucked and I know it now.

Yea Ingrid. That is a classic scam when a dealer is aligned with a credit union who are notorious for jacking interest rates after they get a "fish" on the line or have those hidden balloon payments at the end of the loan. That was part of the Savings and Loan debacle back in the 80's. I can't blame you. Live and learn especially with cars. Car loans suck and the new assholes are Wells Fargo. Stay clear of them like that have the ebola virus.

I only took out the loan because people (including dad) were telling me I had to build a credit history at 21 years of age...decided it was silly and paid it off after 2 years. I've paid cash for the 3 new cars I've bought since then, feel like it can be an advantage to tell the salesman I don't need to finance and we can just nail down a sale RIGHT NOW if they don't fuck with me.
I was naive enough to think at the time that my employer's credit union must have been looking out for my interests...what a little dope!!!!

You just missed the V8 SHO then!!!
I was working on a new IC for the Ford EEC module and we were told it was going to debut in the V8 SHO. Went to Dearborn and saw one on the dyno and another in the open floor...was checking it out with my coworkers and a Ford guy sidled up to us and said, "Don't EVER buy one of these."
We were flabbergasted and wanted details...he said the V8, despite being only 3.4l, did not fit in the car properly and they couldn't get enough air into it. It had LESS power than the V6 it was replacing as far as he was concerned! They also went to an auto tranny instead of the manual most sporty car drivers would likely have preferred. They were only going V8 because some exec decided they "had" to have one to compete in the segment they were targeting.
That engine basically killed the SHO until 2010.

Until these globalists destroy our currency. Cash is still King. Like you, I love the look on asshole salesmen's faces when you tell them you are paying cash, what's your best deal. They start hemming and hawing and I just basically tell them, if you don't want to deal, I am going to the next dealer. On the way out I usually call them an asshole.

To paraphrase an Office Space quote, "I didn't really miss it..."

The V6 SHO was always a better car. In fact I just sold mine last weekend for $3500 US. 20 years old, never failed me. Many modifications on it and the guy who bought it did most of the work....

I now have an 2005 55 AMG Benz and it is a great car and very much a predator.

But that SHO was much more nimble, if not faster.

I had a long debate with my sister n law (CPA) over the merits of buying new vs used and finance vs cash.

Her general feeling which I agree with...a quality used car is a better investment than a new lessor quality car just about 100% of the time. Cash vs finance...she was kinda on the fence...pay interest on a depreciating asset...not good...pay cash for a depreciating asset...not good either. When pressed to get off the fence...she said that if you have the cash and you're not going to be cash poor after the purchase...cash is best.

I've owned about 8 or 9 vehicles...the 1st 4 were all new, all financed...I paid off 3 of the 4 and the 4th the insurance company paid it off (totaled)...surprisingly...I had a $4000 cash windfall...added my gas guzzling SUV which got a whopping $3500 in trade and put that down on 2 used cars.

Forgot to put a picture with it.
6.6 Liter 400ci/400TurboHydromatic

Just to show you how badly emissions controls messed with US auto makers in the '70s...that 400 ci V8 in the '77 Grand Prix only made 180hp. The same sized Pontiac engine in the late '60s made 350hp.
