Geno Smith - QB - Jets

The New York Daily News reports No. 38 pick Geno Smith has fired his agents over "displeasure (with) his draft position."

Welcome to the big leagues, Geno. Per reporter Manish Mehta, Smith thought he "would and should be the No. 1 overall pick," but was given "no assurance of his draft position." Smith shooting the messenger over his draft position isn't a promising indication of how he'll handle the New York spotlight, but players changing agents is hardly a rarity. It won't be a story going forward.

I heard about that. It's not his agent's fault he was overrated.

This seems weird to me; I was under the impression once they sign with an agent, the agent gets his cut of the contract regardless of what happens. Wouldn't the new agent be working for nothing until Geno gets his 2nd contract?

The new agent could cash in if he can get him some endorsement deals; which won't be hard to do out of the New York market.

What a bitch move. Always a sense of entitlement with these kids now. The kid is mad he was drafted in the second round instead of first overall. It was known he wasnt going to be the #1 pick. He should be happy to be given a chance to play in the NFL at all.

This is why I hate Eli Manning. Saying he wouldn't play in San Diego if they drafted him and essentially forced a trade on draft day.

What a punk.

You weren't picked #1 overall or in the 1st round because you're not that good Geno and you're agents couldn't do anything about that.

So we're going to have another cry baby QB that's going to blame his receivers or offensive line or the coach when things don't work out.

maybe this very attitude is what made him tumble? can this type of personality lead a team in tough times? or is he going to pass blame to teammates and continue the circus in NY?

this is where the GM's job is tied to his QB, he had better be right?

I watched the 30/30 documentary on the agents and they're not in a good spot in the NFL. The agents have to pay up front for all the training and stuff which can run thousands and thousands of dollars. And then they can be replaced with notice - I don't think they get to keep the full amount of the contract after the signing if they get replaced, but someone can probably chime in on that.

I guess he is mad because his agent didn't turn him into the next Douglas Bubbletrousers.

I'm sure the agent made promises he didn't/couldn't keep...

I'm not taking Geno's side, but agents are sleazy...

Yeah the flip side is the agent probably promised he'd get him drafted 1st overall or some nonsense to lock him in.

You know what I thought about that afterwards before posting that news. However, I'm sure it's prohibited for them to make any "promises" to their clients to lure them. I am almost certain that that is part of the standard practice for that profession as part of their ethical bylaws.
