Game Thread: Week 16: Chargers

Cool, I always wondered how to do a prefix. Now I know!

Last week was week one of the playoffs.

On to week two.

Short week and both starting cb's injured. Chargers McConkey already back to form.

Bo can't have a week 1 relapse if he wants to see the playoffs.

I wouldn't call this a "playoff" game but would be nice to win it. Pressure is off. We win one and we are in.. We lose all 3 and we still may be in (Hope we don't get in doing that though)

Broncos says Surtain ankle is minor.

Still doesn't mean he won't miss this week being a short week but good news.

Sounded like last week the plan was maybe to sit Moss this week to be extra careful with him. He was doing work on the side last week. We may speed his recovery up if Surtain does miss. However, could be smartest for the long haul to let both sit if we have to. That would mean a lot more of Mathis and maybe Reese Taylor, Tremon Smith and perhaps eve Newsome over Wallace.

Abrams-Draine has played well.

Our run game is not good enough to win. It's a tough task to win on the road on TNF but much better coming off a win.

However, we are 1-0 on the road this year on Thursday night games, plus it gives us extra rest the following week, so a good and a bad.

The road team has faired much better this year on Thursday night games then years past.

I hate Thursday night games but I suppose the Broncos had a reason in mind.

It gives them a mini bye week over the Christmas holiday and prior to the road game at Cincinnati. Not sure if that's enough of a reason to agree to the flex. Tough turnaround time against an opponent at home. Would love to see the Broncos extract some revenge for the loss they took at home to the Chargers (only game I attended in person this year).

I wasn’t thrilled they approved the flex. A division game and on the road…it was more important to have a full week for this one than the next one. But what is done is done…

Well I seen a smile on Mayson face last week when talking about Tyler Badie said something looking good .. then said he is why we let the WR go because they can only bring so many from injurie reserve

Because Payton is looking back at the Cincy Bengals. They know what Chargers are. It's kind of a defeatist attitude to look back instead of looking forward but Payton seems to be living right this year.

Both the Chargers and Broncos r haven't beaten any of the really good teams on their schedule.

I would say there are two really nice reasons to do the flex...

1) Chargers have been pretty beat up of late so giving them a short week could mean key players missing. Just unfortunate the Broncos got beat up in their first game back from the Bye. Hopefully guys like Surtain are ok and just need a couple of days of rest.

2) The Chargers are pretty much the exact same team we played at the beginning of the season. The Broncos are night and day different. So preparation wise I think Chargers have more work to do this week than the Broncos to be ready for everything that could be thrown at them.

Bonus: 3) Broncos also got extra preparation time during the bye week so could already be ahead of schedule in film work and getting their plan in place.

I will say up to this point Payton has pushed all the right buttons. The staying on the East Coast for the back to back road games and winning both. The hard training camp compared to years past has really paid off in games like last night. So I'm going to trust that he had some good thoughts behind this plan.

Love that he is really turning into such an incredible weapon and is making a positive impact every single week! He was my favorite pick of that draft so nice to see them figuring out how to use him and him proving them right to move up into the late 2nd to get him.

Surtain was estimated as a full participation at practice today.

(we don't actually practice today) but we have to give an estimated report. Good news but doesn't mean a ton until we see how tomorrow goes.

DJ Jones, Jaleel McLaughlin, Riley Moss, John Franklin-Myers estimated as non participants.

I think Jaleel is out this week. DJ Jones is tough to say with his finger. Hopefully it isn't broken. If Surtain is in this week I would fully expect Moss to be out (and probably if Surtain is out he is still out) with the Bengals game being his target date. Franlin-Myers I think will go this week.
