College football's Week 1 winners and losers

West Virginia: The Mountaineers were almost a four-touchdown underdog against No. 2 Alabama and weren't given much of a shot to test the Tide. But at halftime West Virginia trailed by just three, 20-17, and pushed Bama deep into the fourth quarter before falling 33-23. Clint Trickett played well at quarterback and would have had a better chance to pull off an upset if not for a series of critical drops by his receivers. Things are looking up after a 4-8 finish last year.

Now they have to get back to work and not rest after a respectable loss..need to crush Towson:suds:

Yes, DC, I was impressed with the effort, I hope that the team can sustain that effort, and not let their old habit of playing lousy against inferior teams creep back in. WVU needs to get back to what is expected, pound those who you are supposed to pound, and put up a great effort even when overmatched. I can not remember the year, or the opponent, but Nehlen was still coaching, and one of the announcers said that win lose, or draw, everyone got WVU's best shot.

I was pleasantly surprised as well, especially by the O-Line. They pretty much had their way with 'Bama. Our receivers had trouble catching the ball. Skills players tend to develop when the offensive line is strong. I was impressed.

And after this loss the #8 team picked in the B12 is getting some votes in the polls.

For me the most impressive improvement was at QB. Trickett impressed me last year and I said on here at the 1/2 way mark that but for some critical dropped passes, WV would have had a much different result and would have been a contender in the B12. But then Trickett got hurt, the D collapsed into #%*&#@ (a fully descriptive word escapes me). Our offense could not execute and we lost easy wins late in the season for what was one of the most disappointing seasons in more than a decade.

But if they can maintain the level of execution I saw Saturday, if they continue to follow the plan and focus - great things can happen. As I have said on here prior - it really didn't matter as much to me that we lost (though I was prayin' and hopin' for the W), I was so impressed with the focus I saw in the teams eyes on both sides of the ball. They were in that game and they cared if they won or lost. They showed pride and effort in the way they played. I haven't seen a whole lot of that the past season and a half. It's what I expect from a WVU team and I have missed it.

It reminded of the teams from the early 80's. They didn't always win, but they fought from the first kick to the last whistle. And when they walked off the field at the end of the game - everyone stood on their feet and applauded a hard-fought, well played contest. And you were proud that this was your team. I felt a little of that on Saturday. It felt good. :suds: Cheers to job well done.

I hope they can keep the level of play up in the upcoming games. Last year WVU played well against the really good teams, but stunk it up against the lousy teams. I want some payback against UMD!!!!!

Gain votes after losing and lose votes after winning 54-0... SMH. Yeah, WVU lost votes after beating Towson.

If we keep winning like this week and next week we will some votes.

I think if we win this week we could possibly break into the Top 25, which would hopefully set us up for a night game with Oklahoma.
