Not a blockbuster, though...

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Ryan O’Byrne from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward prospect Michael Bournival.

O’Byrne, 26, has skated in three games for the Canadiens this season, tallying no points and four penalty minutes. The 6-foot-5, 234-pound defenseman was Montreal’s third-round pick (79th overall) in the 2003 Entry Draft. He dressed in a career-high 55 games during the 2009-10 season (1g/3a) and also appeared in 13 of Montreal’s 19 playoff contests.

“Ryan is another young defenseman who will add size and depth to our team,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.

Good. He will now have more chances to be caught in the washing machine every year...

And Les Habs get smaller.

Can you get smaller by trading away a piece that never gets on the ice? Poor Ryan, had a decent rookie year that had most people happy then just kind of regressed.

Maybe they are still mad at this:

Bournival is not too tiny, hes 6'1" 190 at age 18. I never heard of him but he is having a decent year in the Q.

I heard the Avs made this move to neutralize Corey Perry. Pretty tough to swing a purse that's been craftily swiped.

so to summarize:

1) made to look silly by a Mule
2) shoots puck into own net
3) purse-snatcher

sure, welcome to the division. :)
also, fuck the Avs.

O'byrne handled the trade with poise and class.

Honestly the way Spacek has performed some nights I'd have had O'byrne above him on the depth chart.
