I was hoping a Canuck fan can shed some insight on why Ballard is not getting any playing time. Thanks.

He's just never been able to gain the coach's confidence.
Came into the season coming off hip surgery, and it took a couple of months to get up to speed.
even then, he had been a $4.2 million healthy scratch several times throughout the year.
yeah he makes the odd gaffe, but he somehow landed lower on the pecking order than Aaron Rome.

The coach refers to him as "an option".

Ballard was a force in Florida and Phoenix, I wonder if it's all in his head?

seems it's mainly in AV's head. though that frequent benching has shaken Ballard's confidence, too.
His last few interviews, he's talked about being afraid to make mistakes. you can't play at a high level like that.

well.... Aaron "off the glass no matter what" Rome can.

Wow, that's one very high priced option. He makes more money than Mark Streit.:behindsofa:

2nd highest paid d-man on the team.
only signed for 4 more years at $4.2m.... with a no trade clause*.
and the coach just refuses to play him.

*he can designate 7 destination teams

I should clarify, Streit makes 4.1 million & has two years remaining on his contract.

Is it true the GM is ticked off at Vignault for not playing Ballard?

hard to say. Gillis / Gilman certainly won't come out and criticize the coach at this point in the playoffs.
Ballard was a pretty high profile addition though - can't reflect well that he's a spare part right now.

I had read that Luongo played a part in targeting 'a player like Ballard' after the defense corps refusal to block shots in last year's playoffs. so there's all sorts of politics involved.

I wonder if the 'next year' affect will give the Sharks the edge in this series. In 2009, the Hawks got to the WCF but were bombed out by Detroit. Last year they seemed to have learned from that experience well and were much better prepared.

Now I guess we will see in San Jose learned anything from last year's sweep. It is pretty much the same situation too, Team A(Sharks) got killed in the previous years WCF. Come back next year as the 2 seed to play the number 1 seed.

The Luongo angle is interesting. He certainly can't complain this postseason. The Canucks have been putting their bodies in harms way in all 13 games.

Luongo got up this morning and brushed his teeth. I await your negative reply. :)

Just flipping through the channels here as many of the HD are not working for some reason - ESPNNews was working. Happen to see Melrose's mug and a graphic on the left hand of the screen saying San Jose advanced to their first conference finals with the game 7 victory over Detroit.

So I must have misunderstood last season's trip to the conference finals - was San Jose in the east last year?

For anybody out there in the States bemoaning that NHL hockey is not on the Mouse affiliated network, this is what you would be getting.

Ian White's wife went into labour during game 7 of the Wings - Sharks game...She decided to stay at the game and headed with Ian to the hospital "after the game was over".

That's good stuff.
