Joyce had his name back in the news yesterday, lol...

MLB will not let Jim Joyce umpire Armando Galarraga's games - ESPN

He'll never live that one down. I can't till I'm at a game he's umping so I can heckle the ever-living shit out of him :D:horn:

The only thing I can say in his defense is that he manned up and admitted the mistake. When the last time an NHL ref or the NHL for that matter did the same?

They always come up with a bullshit story and spin the situation. BTW, The NFL admits their mistakes as well.

Shit, I hate it when that happens. Still, one can click "watch it on Youtube" with no problem, right?

They won the game. So reversing the call really doesnt accomplish anything. He is still a below avg pitcher who had a good game.

DON'T MAKE ME GO ALL ADOLF HITLER ON YOUR ASS!

Yeah, he manned up. Props to him for doing that. But, what else was he going to do? It was as obvious as calling the sky blue on a cloudless day that the guy was out.

Perfect games aren't no-hitters. They're way more impressive. F'ing one of those up on out #27 is an egregious gaffe that won't ever be lived down. It is now immortalized in reffing infamy.

I understand you 100% but did you read my comment about the NHL and NFL? Fans would much rather hear that someone fucked up then some song and dance story about an obvious bad call. That is my point.

I did read that, and I guess I kinda respect him for doing that.... at the same time, him admitting he was wrong was very unprecedented as far as the MLB goes. Those crusty umps would rather eat dog shit than concede they were wrong.

If you put all your eggs in only a few baskets, the league won't survive. It's boring when you KNOW who's going to win. It's boring when you expect the same matchups every year, and the same fan bases are pouring money into the league. Basically, it's a bunch of untapped resources. And the guy says "who wants to see the Bucks in the Finals?" Personally, I'd probably watch then.

Basketball has always been a game of dynasties. How is any of this new?

Most teams were built around one star. You didnt see Bird go to the Lakers or Magic to the Celts. That is the difference, the new fad is building star teams yet there arent enough to keep the game relevant in smaller markets.

Despite his gaffe, Jim Joyce is considered the best umpire in the league by the players, for what it's worth.

As for the NHL vs NBA model, the NHL model is better. It maximizes resources. If you focus all of your resources in one place, or a small percentage of places, it leaves you vulnerable elsewhere. If the smaller markets in the NBA start to completely fail, the league will suffer.

As they would in most sports.

I never questioned his overall ability. The fact remains, Jim Joyce royally fucked up on a play that will never, ever be forgotten. Hell, they wrote a book about it

Are you serious?

Magic > Kareem
Bird > McHale, Johnson, Parish
Jordan > Pippen
Shaq > Kobe
Duncan > Ginoble, Parker

The 2004 Pistons are the only championship team you can find in the last 30 years that didn't have at least 2 Hall of Famers/Top All-Stars on their roster (and even then had 4 very good or second-tier all-stars).

This is not a NEW fad. Basketball is all about dynasties b/c a few players influence the game like in no other sport.

Most of the players you mention above were on the same team prior to their superstar status. This can not be said of the Heat.

The way it comes about may be up for debate. Boston and Miami in recent years have come about a little different than L.A. and Chicago back in the day. The result is still the same - top talent on a few teams that dominate the standings and playoffs for years at a time and for the better part of a decade in some instances.

I enjoy hockey more, but I do enjoy watching the NBA. There are fine displays of athleticism in both. There are fine human beings and douchebags in both. But to think the NHL will someday make more money than the NBA seems insane to me. Does anyone actually believe that?

The NBA revived itself on star power - Magic and Bird in the 80s. Two teams LOADED with talent that dominated the league. Jordan kept it going in the 90s. They watched in droves.

Bostons 3 were in their career twilights, seems totally different to me.
