Man I love this dog's intensity. We were training yesterday and Whip was bounding around in huge leaps because it was on our own property and he knew that I had a pigeon planted in the launcher. So in this picture he's come from right to left and leaped right over the bird in a 15ft leap. He realized it in mid air and turned like a cat. He landed in position like spiderman on a wall and just FROZE. I had my 16Ga, Alpha 100 and launch remote all in my hand but I just had to pull out the cell phone and capture the moment.

I was contemplating a Llewellin Setter or GSP when I was looking for a hunting dog and went with a gsp for Chukar. Still want a setter though

GSPs are beautiful dogs and very hearty.

I have zero complaints about my setter but it is true that they wilt in the heat. Whip will run all day long in brisk weather but in the summertime I really can't run him at all. Fortunately, I have a cold stream that runs on my property so he can run and splash and run and splash all through the heat.

During bird season it's no issue at all.

Well year 4 is underway and Whip just gets better and better. He's become adept at re-positioning to pin a walking bird and he's as obedient as ever. Stays 40yds out in cover and 200yds out in fields and hedgerows. Just a joy to hunt with and we're bagging birds every time out though my shooting is horrendous this year. Cripes.

Whip found 12 birds and bumped a 13th on Saturday morning. The last four points were trying to get back to the truck after limiting out because I forgot to pack a lead.

I got a Springer Spaniel puppy for X-mas in 1975 when I was 15. Beautiful dogs....tho my Pal was never a great hunting dog, she was a real sweetheart.

This year I didn't do a second of brush-up training with Whip before the season and yesterday at 5 yrs old (can't believe this thread started so long ago) he handled perfectly. His pace and range were ideal and his points were fully staunch. He's just a dream to hunt with.

Whip had another day for the record books yesterday. We had a large group along and he pointed 10 birds. My buddy came along with his young son just to watch the dog and man, they got a show.

Happy Birthday Whip!

I can't believe he's five years old already....cripes.

His birthday present is that dad got a snow day so he doesn't have to sit by the window waiting for me to get home~

Today I brought back my 8 month old female black lab Madi from the trainer today. Watching her work, close and methodical in the field today and shooting three pigeons over her, I couldn't believe how well she marked those birds. My trainer told me she marks better then a lot of the 18 month old dogs he's finishing training with blinds. I've had Curt train my last three labs. He told me I think Madi is the best of the bunch when it comes to marking and working the upland fields. My breeders Libby and Ron who I bought my last three labs from are amazing people and breed hunting labs the right way Duckdawg Retrivers out of North Platte, Nebraska I just can't say enough about them. I am so ready for the hunting season!

This guy's on fire here in year 5. Can't believe he turns 6 in December. He's the best dog at my club and it's not even close!

Wifey took this fine pic the other day:

Whip's in year 6 and he's in his prime. He's the most amazing dog I've ever hunted behind. He knows the birds and their tricks and he doesn't get fooled much. His points are intense and he's silly staunch. We had a great opening day and then a few days later he was licking at his wrist.....rats, an infection from a thorn. Vet visit and they didn't do much but wrap it and send him home. Cripes, I don't have time to watch it; bird season just started. Well it festered and swelled and we had to go back and get it cut open and cleaned properly like we should have. He took two stitches and we lost week 2 and 3....cone of shame for two weeks....you know the hassle. I took out the the stitches on Wednesday and this morning he was right back to just being silly good. He got us 10 points in the first hour!

The dog and the bird in the foreground are wet cause that one dropped into a pond and we had a water retrieve. Just a great day and I hope to finish the season without interruption~

With my lab turning 9 this past year, and his hunting days pretty much over, I’ve started breaking in a new gun dog. Griffey is 10 months old and showing some promise. Last weekend was his first real day hunting. We put up rooster but I didn’t shoot. He listened well and hung close enough A9A03065-8E41-4766-9748-5329E27F79DB.jpegA88BBBE7-180B-4D1E-8D3D-81DC50235A30.jpeg5F14FFA9-2A50-4AE2-8E33-890AD9946AEE.jpeg
