I look at this play...

I hear people complaining about this play.....

and I ask myself.....

isn't football a contact sport?

Even fine-happy Goddell thought this was a "football play".

Pretty sure Seattle has 2 pages of people talking about this very topic on their own board so I don't think this is some Bronco fans getting their panties in a bunch. I do think it is a Seattle player trying to see if he can get a call in the game that otherwise wouldn't have been called.

To me though not sure calling out physical play is the best thing to do since Seattle benefits from a game where the refs let the players play.

I'm sure that play will draw the question of the pick rules into focus in the off season. Should hitting still be allowed in football? Yes. I think most of us hate how much physical play has been removed, but to say hits on receivers going over crossing routes can't be allowed anymore because of the whole defenseless receiver garbage, but receivers can flat out level defenders doing nothing more but running is ludicrous.

I don't think they should call it a penalty in the SB if it is in the rule book. Seattle should man up and find a way to deal with it. But at what point are we totally killing defense if we keep taking away their ability to hit and yet leave in what really is cheap shots like this, but only for the offense? You know damn well if a defender puts an offensive guy on the ground in routes its a penalty 100% of the time. If you want to leave picks in then allow hits over the middle again. Leave it fair.

How the hell was that hit dirty? Has he seen some of the blocks that Kearse lays on DB's?

i know they said it was legal, I'm just not sure how this is considered legal. Obviously Welker was taking out Talib, not to hurt him, but to open up the Thomas. If done right I can see how it's legal but this was blatant.

It's legal because it happened nearly simultaneously to the ball hitting Thomas in the hands. Yes, when you slow it way down you can see he arrived very slightly early, but at full speed you'd never be able to tell that, hence it's legal.

Nobody talks about what a bad drop that was.

It was a bad drop. It happens to the best of them. Considering the rest of the day he had, I can live with it.

yes because Wes Welker would be every teams top choice to purposely use as a battering ram......:L

When I watch that GIF what I take away from it is that the Welker hit wasn't even necessary. It looked like Thomas had an easy two stride gap on Talib. No way was Talib going to catch or knock away that pass.

True and that gif doesn't show the optimum angle. The view across the field shows the ball quite some distance away when contact is first initiated.

Let's just say that, for the sake of argument, the hit was dirty.

It, in no way, had anything to do with Brady sailing the ball over the head of his WR's, nor Denver stuffing the run.

The Pats are a team that relies on moving the ball and putting up points more than defense - and they couldn't get points on the board that day.

Eh, that's not the only reason they do it. It can affect yac also.

The broncos will run a lot of these rub routes on Sunday and the whole point is to create highly efficient routes that are almost like a long hand off but they are expecting a lot of these to turn into decent gains with yac and the more defenders you can rub, the higher the chances of a big gain happening.

Funny thing is yesterday I heard Mike Pereira (former head of officiating) say it was legal but then admit the hit was before the ball got to Thomas (which makes it illegal). Since it was so close that you can't expect the refs to be able to make that call, therefore legal.....LOL

It's total BS (as usual)....it was a bad play and clearly illegal since it clearly (even a fraction of a second) happened before the ball got to Thomas. This play happens every game is is called alot. Infact the Patriots drive before this drive their TE (Hoomamwhatever) was called for barely touching a Bronco defender. This Welker play was much worse and blatent.....NFL wants all the rules for the offense-- defense gets nothing.

The problem is it wasn't clear, at least not at live speed. Hence it's not a penalty. And the penalty on the Patriots, although obviously not as hard of a hit, was illegal because it happened well before the ball got to the receiver.

Totally agree on both counts but it is funny that NFL says it's not a penalty when it clearly was. To call it in real speed is very difficult so the non-call in the game is no big deal but the NFL should not say its not a penalty when it was.

But it wasn't a penalty. The whole point is that it happens so close to the ball reaching the receiver that at live speed you can't differentiate, hence it can't be a penalty. The NFL says it's not a penalty because it's not a penalty.
