Giants give Vogelsong 2 years plus a club option ($8.3 million - don't know if that includes the option year).

Apparently, it's 4.0MM for 2012 and 2013 with a club option for 2014, buyout of 0.3MM.

However, this has not been confirmed yet.

That's a lot of money for a guy who has exactly 1 good(great) season under his belt at the tender age of 34 and who was out of the majors for 4 years prior to last season.

But I see they are hedging their bets with the buyout option so I'm good with this. If he can go for 180-200IP with a 3.50 ERA or better I will be happy.

Edit: Shit that's 2 years before the buyout option hmmm.... fuck it it's not my money, but I'd be pretty nervous guaranteeing 8 million to a guy who never showed anything before last season.

Not me. It's a pretty reasonable contract for an All-Star. Look at it another way: if the Giants cut him loose, how much do you think the Yanks would snatch him up for? He's making less in 2 years than Huffer made last year alone.

I disagree...I think that the contract was pretty reasonable for what he did and even if he regresses a bit...we have to remember...he's a #4 starter...

If he performs like last year, he's way underpaid. Even if he regresses a bit, it will still be a good deal for the Giants.

3 million in 2012, 5 million in 2013 and a 6.5 million option with a .3 million buyout in 2014.

Now Cain's turn

Giants Agree To Two-Year Deal With Vogelsong: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

So, put in WAR terms, Song needs to give us 0.8 WAR this year; 1.1 WAR in 2013; and 1.4 WAR in 2014 if we pick up his option.

In 2011 he gave us 3.7 WAR, for which he should have been paid about $10MM, but was actually paid less than $1.0MM.

Simply put, there is no possible way for him to regress enough to be a net negative on our payroll. In fact, it's highly unlikely he'll regress enough to not justify his salary over the next two years. If he does fall off, we have a safety blanket in the buyout for 2014.

This is a brilliant, and club friendly, contract. Sabey Sabes rocks.:rockon:

In other words, if the Giants DFA him today, he has already performed enough to justify all the money they will give him over the next 2 years (plus last year).

As a reminder, Huff is actually in a similar boat. WAR-wise, he earned approx 20M in '10 while actually depositing only 3M. Huff does not have to be an all-star this year to justify his contract. I think that if he performs like a good bench player, he becomes a net wash.

That kind of thinking only works for bean counters IMO. You sign someone to a big contract expecting to at least have the player earn much of it, not to pay them for past performance. Huff's fail last year is a big reason why we missed the playoffs, and I'm not letting him off the hook so easily.

Did he have to have another 2010 in 2011, no of course not. But we had every right to demand better and hopefully we get it in 2012. I don't care how the wonky pay for WAR numbers look. This is simple common sense.

I REALLY wish that your logic was the reason that Sabean signed Vogelsong to the contract extension. I wish beyond words that I could believe that Sabean actually used advanced metrics when he agreed to this deal.

I'm really fine with this deal. In a season that was filled with everything that could possibly go wrong Vogs was a bright light in a rather dim 2011 season. If I had to name the one thing that I really enjoyed about 2011 ... it would be Vogs ...

and the resurrection of Panda. Even a World Series ring can't make me forget how awful he was in 2010.

Volgy pitched 180 innings last year, but missed a few starts due to a late call-up. I could see him pitching right around 200 innings, ERA mid to high three's. I think Noah Lowry's 2005 is about what Volgelsong will do, which would be about 3.0-3.5 WAR will would make this a bargain deal.

Exactly. Thanks for the detailed statistical analysis that I was too lazy (and not smart enough) to post. Vogey will be well worth it, IMO. He really seems to have gotten to the point in his career where he just knows how to pitch. Krukow mentioned it several times last season. Vogey knows how to attack hitters and he will do well throughout the term of this contract. With this apparent bargain in the books, this will hopefully free up money to sign Timmy.
