MINNESOTA, March 10- – Much like the Indianapolis Colts, the Minnesota Vikings are in the process of reshaping their team.
These times are never easy for the fans and are even harder for those who make these decisions as they have to drop the hammer on people that they have gotten to know and in many cases like a great deal.
This afternoon in a statement, the club announced that CB Cedric Griffin and OGs Anthony Herrera and Steve Hutchinson are off the roster.
“It was a tough decision as we move forward and prepare for the upcoming season and the future of our organization,” Vikings Head Coach Leslie Frazier said. “All three individuals have meant a great deal to the Vikings organization both on and off field over the years. We wish all of them the best and thank them for their service to the Minnesota Vikings.”
Now that for all intensive purposes the Vikings know that they hold the next pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. After yesterday’s pile driving trade between the Redskins and the Rams, it looks like they are getting on the move.
It’s not a secret that the Skins will most likely roll with Robert Griffin III (Baylor) at QB after the Colts officially wrap things up with QB Andrew Luck (Stanford).
It’s doubtful that it’s a coincidence that the club cut costly cap space at the offensive line and cornerback positions as these are their areas that are screaming “ upgrade me!”
It’s been our opinion for some time that the Vikings will go defense and draft Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick or LSU’s Morris Claiborne. This option probably led to the departure of Cedric Griffin.
If not, the Vikings fans can say hello to tackle Matt Kalil out of USC. The Kalil scenario is the most popular one and with good reason. He will instantly step in and help protect both QB Christian Ponder and to a certain extent the recovering Adrian Peterson.
Right now, the best player on that team is Jared Allen who despite playing well in 2011, got almost no help from the secondary.
Frazier is a defensive guy and it would only make sense for him to see life from the viewpoint of preventing tail kickings versus relying on Chris Ponder to come through in a shoot-out on a consistent basis.
Don’t be surprised if the Vikings come to terms with their selection before the draft goes live.
