Dolphins pull transition tag from Olivier Vernon

At one point on Tuesday, the Dolphins had agreed to trade for cornerback Byron Maxwelland had the transition tag on defensive endOlivier Vernon.

Wednesday morning has brought a reminder that nothing’s official until the league year starts on Wednesday afternoon. The deal with the Eagles for Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso is in limbo because of Maxwell’s shoulder and Vernon is now set to become an unrestricted free agent.

PFT has learned, via a league source, that the Dolphins have rescinded the tag they placed on Vernon last week. The move is one that started getting discussed when the Dolphins signed Mario Williams on Tuesday night and it means the Dolphins will not be able to match any offers that come Vernon’s way.

Based on the Twitter feed of Vernon’s agent David Canter, it’s a decision that wasmet with happiness by the Vernon camp. They were barred from talking to other teams until 4 p.m. ET under the terms of the tag, but are now free to negotiate with anyone and everyone.

Vernon was already at the top of the list of available pass rushers in free agency and this move should make him even more appealing since teams no longer have to wait (and hold cap space) while waiting to see if the Dolphins match their offer. The Dolphins will also be eligible for a compensatory draft pick when and if Vernon signs elsewhere, something that wasn’t the case with the transition tag.

There have been multiple reports that the Dolphins are not planning to part ways with defensive end Cameron Wake despite failing to reach agreement on an extension that would lower his $9.8 million cap hit for the 2016 season. That would leave Wake and Williams as the top defensive ends in Miami while Vernon presumably plies his trade elsewhere.

So they sign Mario and decide to let Vernon go? Not so sure I would go that way...Dolphins making some strange decisions...

Dumb move. I would love to see Atlanta scoop him up, but I wont get my hopes up.

The reasoning is they will get at least a 3rd round compensary pick or nothing if he left.

Going for Williams who is arguably in decline at 31yrs, and passing on Vernon who is entering his prime at 25yrs?

Dolphins have also traded down in the 1st round as part of the Alonso/Maxwell trade with the Eagles. Eagles now at #8, Dolphins at #13.

In theory Williams and Vernon off set each other with regards to compensatory picks...

But they won't. While an incredibly complicated formula (some think made up as the league goes along) the FAs you sign are weighed against the FAs you lose when determining your picks. So Williams and and Vernon will basically offset each other, regardless of what Schefter says...Had they not signed a guy like Williams then he would be correct.
