With Crabtree down, this is a smart move. Davis is a beast with great speed and size. Can't wait to see him flatten some poor CB or safety.

If he is working now to get open against a linebacker or a strong safety how will he get open against a cornerback ?

Yes Davis is a Beast but you are wasting all of his talents by switching him to the outside. A reason he is such a threat is because he clears up the middle of the field almost better than anyone. When defenses dont have to worry about the middle of the field as much it allows them to game plan towards one player more than usual. Also Kaep is unproven in this league and still has to show the world that he could play in the NFL on a consistent basis.

I don't think he will be able to.. unless he gets a short corner where they can throw it high.. but that is ULTRA dangerous.

Never know.. .we aren't football coaches... maybe they can make it work.

I thought the Chiefs built the model on how to use a TE in the modern age with Tony G. Moving him to the outside will hurt their run game

I wouldn't read to much into it. He is just taking reps in practice. The 9ers have taken hits at the WR position for a couple of seasons now due to injuries. This is more of a "if we need you to" approach. VD is still the starting TE.

If by the end of the year (big if) Davis has taken more snaps at the WR position than as a TE (see that Titan who went to the Rams) does he ask for/deserve WR money?

Davis is more of a TE than Cook. Cook is an oversized slot receiver who might play at HB and TE every once in awhile. Davis is a TE that is athletic enough to play WR but imo it would be a mistake to get away from what works.

Davis has always been one of my favorites. Total beast. I bet he would make an awesome WR.

Vernon is practicing with the WRs, but he's going to be a TE. They'll probably move him out wide more often, but he's still primarily a TE.

Yeah, that sounds about right. There's no harm in him taking reps is practice, but he is and should primarily play tight end, and split out for mismatches.
