He can at least take over whatever role Randy Moss had last year. He'll still get down in a three-point stance throughout games, but with Crabtree out, it makes more sense to try to get Davis some extra snaps in favorable positions to help the ball club. Him and Boldin should be Kap's main targets, which I'm sure the entire league expected upon news of Crab's achilles. Of course, we're still hoping that Jenkins and Patton impress, but why not get the ball as often as possible to your Pro Bowlers?

Blind optimism. I'm going to enjoy my misguided faith in Vernon's ability to play WR until he proves me wrong.

He's split out wide before with success, but he's never played there full time. Maybe he's just practicing with the WRs because he doesn't need any practice with the TEs.

He gets better match ups against LBs though, only a few LBs in the NFL can even run with him... and two of them are already on the 49ers.

When I saw the headline on 49ers webzone, saw that it was the press democrat, my first thought from reading the title was "I bet that moron Cohn wrote this story so it is all nonsense" clicked the link, and... yep. closed it without reading

Maybe he's just practicing with the WRs because he doesn't need any practice with the TEs.

I actually think that's the case more than anything. He's already a top notch blocker so why not polish his route running skills and catching.

I think the key term in all of this is "practiced exclusively with the wide receivers." It never says he lined up as a WR.

But it wouldn't surprise me if he does have a few plays split out at WR to be able to get Celek and McDonald on the field at the same time as well. I mean that could cause some confusion with a defense to suddenly see VD split out and who covers him.
