Ok not too long ago the Oilers offered 4 First Round picks for Vanek. Looking back at it that would have been a great trade. They would have gotten 8 first round picks from 2007-2010.
To say the Sabres Picked the same as Edmonton they would have gotten
2007- Sam Gagner
2008- Jordan Eberle
2009- Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson
2010- either Seguin or Hall

Sabres First Round Picks
2008- Tyler Myers & Tyler Ennis
2009- Zack Kassian
2010-?

I understand it wouldn’t have paned out like that but still.

it's a hell of a way to inject a lot of youth is someone wants to overpay one of your guys - especially in a strong draft. Look at LA, who was shedding everything to stockpile draft picks a couple of years ago.

in 2008 - Drew Doughty, Colton Teubert
2007 - Thomas Hickey, Oscar Moller, Wayne Simmonds

that's a heck of a way to fill out a roster that already has young guys like Kopitar, Quick, Brown and presumably Bernier next year

and keep in mind, the Tyler Myers pick was originally Edmonton's (sent to Anaheim on the Penner RFA signing), then traded to Buff.

Playing the what if game is something that any team can do at some point in their history. At that time the Sabres already let go of Briere and Drury. If they would of let Vanek go as well to Edmonton, the fans would of took to the streets with torches and pitchforks.

Vanek had a great season that year and we couldn't afford to get rid of him for players not in the NHL yet.

If the Sabres kept Briere and Drury, I could see them maybe going through with the trade. Even if they did go through with it, the Sabres would still not have a Cup.

That deal with Vanek to Edmonton was never going to happen. The Sabres had lost Briere and Drury and management was getting grilled by the fans and the media.

That's what prompted Darcy to say "We will sign Vanek to a deal" Lowe in Edmonton knew this and knew damn well he wouldn't have to pony up the money. Darcy should have never publicly made that comment even tho he was under fire because by doing so they had to match any offer the Oilers (or any other team) gave him.

Lowe then came across as looking like he was making an effort to sign a "hot ticket" player and Sabres management ended up having to over pay Vanek.

They put themself between a rock and a hard place. Like IPW said the Sabres fans would have gone nut's if they had let Vanek go.

There are very few players out there who are worth four first round draft picks. I know it's basically throwing away a year or three if you pull the trigger, but oh, lord, will you be good after the wait. And the other team will suuuuuuck.

Yeah i understand that, I would have been pissed as well. But if we got a guy like Crosby or OV in return i would say good bye Vanek. It never happen but its fun to talk about it.
