A good putter is going to keep at it and eventually get an edge. Pace has a lot to do with being a good putter and on a fast green with a lot of contour a bad putter is going to have problems.
There's a lot of things going on. Pin and tee placement, golfers not being familiar with the course, poor greens (nobody can deny that). But some low scores were put up this morning because guys were able to be aggressive with nothing to lose.
All this being said, guys are hitting tough shots and it's a tight tournament. These babies can cry all they want about how they want about how they want their courses pristine for them. If that's how this is supposed to be then just limit the tour to super-exclusive private clubs lined with million dollar mansions and take the public course out of the equation. More often than not when they put a public course in the mix there's nothing but complaining. Shit, at the private clubs at least half the members don't even golf to begin with. Look at Augusta's member list. How many times you think any of their members golf a year? 5 times maybe?
It's hard to have good pace on inconsistent greens. And, it's harder to roll them in from distance when you're putting from 20 feet instead of 8. These greens are harder to keep on line because of the poa. They're bumping and therefore falling off line quite a bit, which makes it more difficult. The great putters are making fewer putts but someone like Dustin Johnson, who already isn't a great putter isn't going to be losing as many strokes on the greens compared to normal. Good scores are out there, but it's not coming from people making putts from distance, it has a lot more to do with hitting closer shots and missing fewer putts because of it.
There is no reason to limit the Open to exclusive private clubs. Bethpage is public. Pinehurst is open to the public and is always getting play. Torrey Pines is a municipality. Pebble is public. Chambers Bay can have pristine conditions. The only issue has been the greens and that's not a permanent problem. But, this year, it's favoring good ball strikers and taking advantage away from the good putters, instead of vice versa.
He's smelling bloodThings really looking good for Spieth right now.

Dustin didn't show up for the presentation and not talking to the media. Dude must be devastated.
no. and there's nothing you can do to prove it, so unless you do, anything you say is moot.
