Does anyone out there think that with a 2nd or 3rd round pick, we could draft a SS and upgrade Whitner?
I do.

He takes too many penalties (regardless if they are warranted or not), and he was better in coverage this year but I don't think he's great in coverage.

I think it could very well play out like last year. Most people were worried about losing Goldson and with rookie Reid the secondary would suffer big time but Reid played better than Goldson, took less penalties, and the secondary as a whole was better than last year.

I do.

I think it would be easy to get an upgrade in the coverage department. A rookie safety probably isn't going to be anywhere near as good as Whitner in run support, but I'll take that trade any day.

Not sure I would trade run support, with Bowman not 100%, just my opinion. Can we still get a safety upgrade? Sure, but I think Donte Hitner is valuable and has a knowledge of our schemes. I say bring him back and groom a 4-5 round guy with spot duty throughout the year. He could play Special Teams and be a backup.

I would like to upgrade Whitner but I don't mind bringing him back for another year or two and grooming a later round replacement.

From the team's perspective I just don't see them starting a 2nd year player and a rookie in the backfield. Fangio is the type that prefers vets and I believe Reid only started because of his smarts and they felt comfortable with having a vet like Whitner being the leader of the secondary.

And from a draft perspective I would like the early rounds to focus on WR, CB, and possibly a C while trading away a pick or two for some draft picks next season.

What if Ha Ha Clinton Dix is there @ 20th. Would u not wanna trade up & draft him between 20th-30th? Just bcuz he's a rookie doesn't make him inexperienced. I would love 2 have him & Reid for yrs.

Question for you all...What do you think Whitner is going to want in a contract? There have been rumors the Broncos are interested in him so just wondering how much he would cost to get.

He just finished a three-year 11mil contract. He has shown improvement in coverage and this could be his last big payday. He may want a three-year 13.5 mil, an average of 4.5 mil per year. There is some speculation that the Packers might be interested in him. How about Major Wright of the Bears? He's only 25 years old? What would he command in free agency?

I think because he had a bad year last year plus some injury concerns he might command a little less than that of Whitner. His age and past success though does make him an intriguing prospect.

I wouldn't say not to draft a S if the value is there but it just wouldn't be my primary focus. If the value is roughly equal I would rate WR and CB ahead of picking a S.

Delmas in the bargain bin just peaked my interest slightly.

He turns 27 in couple of months. Ray, do you know how much he made last season? He was set to make $5.5M in base salary plus $500k signing bonus in 2014. Will he be an upgrade over Whitner if the Niners fail to sign him?

I think he counted $1,215,000 against their cap in 2013. I think his personal performance would be a lot better with the supporting cast we have in SF. He might be an upgrade in coverage over Whitner but the run support would need some work from him to even be equal, again with our front 7 that might not matter as much.

There's a lot of strong safeties in the league that are good at run support, there's fewer that are good in coverage.

I think Whitner brings toughness and is a leader in the secondary. He may be the best run supporting safety in the league and he also may be the best hitter as well. I want him back big time, plus he is only what, 27?

I don't want whitner back for the price tag that he thinks he might get. We have other needs. Unless you offer a 5 years 40 million dollar deal but back load it so we can cut him after year 3. Have year 4 and 5 have like a 10 million a year mark. Year 1,2,3 would be 6.5 million. Give him 12 million Guaranteed. something like that.

You need a leader in the secondary, Rogers will be cut, leaving 2 young corners and a 2nd year safety. We need a leader back there, they need to bring Whiter back
