Y! SPORTS

Any referees that are saying these things are calling an unfair game...that is guaranteed. Any ref found insulting players like this should immediately be fired.

Bullshit. This should not be encouraged but there is no evidence of slanted offIciating and no reason to fire the official for this.

You're missing my point. My post is assuming that the player's account is 100% accurate.

Unless the ref said "I'm screwing you over" the evidence is just of unprofessionalism, not of actual bias in the calls.

You could be right about the fairness part. However - this type of behavior should not be tolerated (even if it was somewhat of a joke on the refs part). The officials are paid to be impartial & try to keep an even playing field.

Any behavior like this will at a minimum cause a problem with the perception of the players, coaches and fans. This is the last thing the NFL wants! Even though it probably isn't true - it will open up the perception that games are fixed and the playing field is not level. Again - doesn't matter if it is true - perception is what matters & the media would have a field day with something like this. Can this guy right away if this is true. Make him an example.

If this is true, the official in question needs to be fired. Its impossible for some one to maintain professional objectivity if they have a personal dislike for some one in the situation. To put it outside a football context for a moment, assume some one was in charge of grating loans at a bank. This same person for what ever reason does not like people of mixed race, you seriously think that person would be fair and impartial when granting a mortgage to a mixed race couple??

Now back to the football context. If this guy really said what he is accused of, you dont think he would slant calls against the Skins because of his dislike for Williams?? Sadly its human nature. And the easiest way to fix a game in any sport is to own a ref. DO I think this game was fixed?? No. Do I think they need to seriously address this issue?? Of course they do.

Good post. I don't believe that any games are fixed. However - again - all that matters is perception. The NFL does not need these type of issues & would boot this guy in a second if this type of behavior continues.

Games arent fixed. But I do believe that there are some biases in the ranks of the officials. And its practically impossible to remove those biases. Certain refs are going to consider certain players dirty no matter what. And they will make biased calls based on those perceptions. so I dont find it too far a stretch to say if a Ref personally didnt like a player that he wouldnt take it out on that players team. And conversely if a certain official felt he did like a certain player, its not beyond the realm that he would make calls to help that players team out in a game he was calling.

The replacement Refs issue proved that when they almost had a devout Saints fan Ref a Saints game last year.

You are exactly right Shark. If a guy is going to personally insult players on a team because of his dislike of them...it's human nature to have a bias that works against that person or team. There is one play that come to mind big time yesterday. It was a very late hit on RG3, from behind, and there was no call.

The nature of people is to penalize those you do not like and help those you do. That's human nature.

Remember when the WR David Boston (Mr. Steriods) had a dad who was an NFL ref? They certainly would not allow him to ref his son's game whether he claimed to be unbiased or not. Any factor that could be perceived (does not have to be true) to impact the outcome of the game needs to be addressed.

If this is guy is smart he will keep his mouth shut from now on & possibly address his differences with Williams (or simply fire the guy now). How stupid is this guy for making these type of statements?

The Patriots fan is incorrect.

Unprofessional, racist talk from a REF is grounds for dismissal. Period.

Insulting one team's member is the very definition of bias.

The guy should be fired immediately after his words are verified. No question about it.

Even unverified, he should never be allowed to referee a game we are part of again.

Trent Williams accusation not the first against umpire Roy Ellison | ProFootballTalk

Also - apparently this guy has a track record in this area. The future does not look bright for this guy. Some people just need to learn when to keep their mouth shut (even if players & coaches insult them - in that case they should use their power to penalize teams & kick people out of the game).

Who knows what initiated the Williams incident, but I will say this...I coach HS baseball, and the things said to umpires even at that level is absurd. Fans go to NFL games and shout terrible things at players, but they call ref's every name in the book. Ref's of all sports take a ton of crap they don't deserve, and it's hard for me to blame them when they give it back. It's hard for me to imagine that most of what these guys would say back to players would be even one tenth of what they take. Look at the way Brady and Mallet cussed the ref's at the end of the Monday night game. They should have been knocked on their ass for talking to another man like that

You have to be kidding. So you wouldn't go after the ref for picking up another guy's flag when your player was raped?

In no circumstance does a ref need to get into a verbal confrontation on the field...he can simply throw a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct.

I'm saying a ref shouldn't have to put up with the crap Brady and Mallett were saying whether they blew the call or not. Its just a freaking game, that's all it is, although most people act like it's life and death
