It doesn't have to be a thin tie, if you know how to tie the full Windsor correctly you can use it on most ties sold these days. It's all I've ever used.

I was taught a full Windsor when I was 12. Never used anything different. I can tie it the first time in a mirror and the bottom will be right at my belt buckle every time.
