I had a dream last night that I had dinner with Ken Holland, and I convinced him to trade for Doughty. Holland somehow convinced Lombardi that Ericsson was some sort of a stud, and sent him and Filpulla packing for DD. I've never had such tremendous morning wood.

Too bad you woke up.:D:

Camp starts in LA tomorrow, and Doughty is still eatin' doughnuts in London, Ontario.

Bob McKenzie
Get sense what transpires in next 24 hours with Doughty-LAK is critical. This may, and I said may, be perilously close to going off rails.

Jay Bouwmeester to the Kings (he's making less than Anze Kopitar) and I'm sure Iggy wouldn't mind sharing top spot with Drew Doughty at $7 million per season.

Get it done, Feaster.

I think Doughty thinks he is the face of the franchise. He wants to be paid like the number oneguy. Rumor is that the Kings don't want to pay anyone more than Kopitar. He is the team all star Drew wil be signed but when? And how much? I kind of hope the Kings do great without homes to show that no one is bigger than the team.

The Kings have Jake Muzzin, Thomas Hickey & Viacheslav Voynov all waiting for an opportunity to make the Kings lineup. Derek Forbert might not be too far away either, but he's going to be playing at North Dakota this year.

I think the Kings can handle life without Doughty for a little while. Jack Johnson will get more minutes.

As things stand right now the Kings top 6 would be:

Johnson Mitchell
Greene Scuderi
Drewiske Martinez

With the three kids above battling it out for the final two spots.

Lombardi, on Doughty***8217;s holdout LA Kings Insider

every day he holds out, the standing offer gets reduced by $25,000

LOMBARDI: Well, as we talked about before, there has to be some finality, in terms of when the players are supposed to report. It's no different, I think, than what the other teams have done. It's, `OK, now we have to regroup here and see what evolves, and then I have to go back to ownership. It's no different than anything else. You do this based on 275 days of work, and now it's down to 274

That is one thing I like about Dean Lombardi: he doesn't hold back. True he didn't give years or dollars but he knows the numbers are out there and he knows the fans are mostly on his side. This is the deal and every day you don't sign is costing you money.

How would Kings fans feel if their team had the same policy as the Islanders? Doughty would be out for the season.

I think that Drew or the Kings would have folded by now. Kings have never had that policy but they may in the future. DL seemed to like it when asked about it.

If you have the policy you have to mean it. Chuck made Sean Bergenheim miss an entire season & made it very clear that Bergenheim wouldn't be traded.

Now every Islanders player knows if he doesn't have a contract by the day Training Camp begins he's not going to play in the NHL that season. Some might think it's a tough policy, but I think every team should do it.

thats all well and good to play hardball with Josh Bailey or Sean Bergenheim ... I would have liked to see if the policy would have been used on Tavares

I guarantee you the policy is for every single player in the Islanders organization. Chuck doesn't care who you are.

The Islanders focus is on signing the players they feel are core players to long term deals before they become RFA's so they don't have to do what they did to Bergenheim & Bailey. Sometimes players agree to a deal sometimes they don't. In Bailey's case he turned down his Qualifying offer.

The Islanders have made fair deals with all their core players. Grabner might only make 1 million this year, but the final year of the contract he'll make 5 million.

Okposo will make 4.5 million in the final year of his deal. Many in the media have said the Islanders are being cheap, but that's not the case.

Tavares will make 6 million per in the final 3 years of the contract extension. It's a good deal for both sides. The cap hit is 5.5 million for the length of the contract. Yet Tavares is going to be well paid no matter what.

That's a rep for Dean Lombardi!!

Doughty needs to snap out of it. There is no way he should be getting more than $6M/year.

Kings not going cave in

Leiweke: Kings won't blink in salary stalemate with Doughty - latimes.com
I support Dean on what he's trying to do here. He's not trying to be cheap. He's not trying to be disrespectful. We love Drew. Its an allocation issue here and everyone, including most of the players I've run into in the last week, they get that we are desperate to try to keep enough resources to keep this team together long term.;

Leiweke: Kings won't blink in salary stalemate with Doughty - latimes.com

So, to sum up

Drew thinks he's being disrespected because the Kings won't increase their offer.

The Kings think "someone" is whispering in Drew's ear.

The Kings think Drew is not able or not yet willing to stand up to this mysterious "someone."

They appear to be apart by more than the previously quoted $200K.

The number now appears to be $300-400K. Which would put Doughty's desired number at $7.1-7.2MM.

Lombardi has the go-ahead to sweeten the pot. Which means, if you ask me, that Lombardi will sweeten the pot (or Leiweke said something he wishes he hadn't said).

The Kings are explicitly announcing that they plan to spend to the upper limit of the cap, by adding pieces at the deadline. You can't say, "we're not getting a tree this year because we're going to Hawaii," and then not go to Hawaii.

If Doughty gets more, that money comes out of the pockets of Jarret Stoll, Dustin Penner, Willie Mitchell or Zach Parise. (Sorry, I had to.)

Or Scott Parse.

If Doughty doesn't end this, this week, the Kings will possibly maybe kinda sorta "begin" to "move on." Whatever that means. Since they're not trading him, I don't think it means anything at all. It's a threat borrowed from the impotent ex-boyfriend playbook.

How I read the tea leaves

Lombardi is about to make an offer, maybe going up to $7MM, which would be halfway to the $7.1-$7.2MM that Leiweke implies Doughty is asking for.

Leiweke is publicly advising Doughty to accept this compromise, otherwise his teammates will resent him.

It makes no sense for Leiweke to lay the groundwork for Doughty to "come home," if they're not then going to follow that up with an offer he's then primed to accept, to "do what he may have to do here, which is stand up and take charge of this decision."

My guess is the offer will be $7MM/6yrs. Lombardi relents on the cash, Doughty relents on the term.

I have talked myself into this Leiweke interview being reason for hope. I would be willing to bet that some kind of sweetened offer will go to Doughty this week and -- dammit -- this would be the perfect time (actually the last chance) for Doughty to end the stand-off before we start to have to assess damages.

I choose to hold out hope that this actually might end by Friday.

I am also pretty sure that if Doughty doesn't sign this week, it will be awhile.

I think Meehan is still pissed that Kopitar left him. Hopefully Doughty does the same. If not it could be awhile before he signs. I hope I'm wrong & he signs this week.

It would be awesome if Kopitar came out and said "Why don't I just take a pay cut? I mean geez, how many millions am I worth?!" thus, making both sides look like asses.

I hope Drew is signed by Thursday or he will be missing at least 2 games. Kings leave for Europe on Sat.
