If you repeatedly put the ball short in the middle of the field you're probably going to get most of your skilled players hurt. The middle of the field with those LBs and safeties taking free run shots will take a toll over the course of a game.

Take a look at the pounding those guys take when they catch the ball in front of the LBs....it's brutal...and as the game goes on after a few really good shots, some guys start making business decisions and drop the ball, or get alligator arms...it's a brutal way to play...not that you couldn't...but most guys would prefer not to try to make their living in there

I will also state that I am no expert by any stretch of my imagination, but watch how hard those dudes get hit in the middle of the field. I'm amazed there aren't even more injuries than there are.
