Arizona also sucks.

A landslide rejection of a bill to move Arizona toward renewable energy because the power company said it would be expensive. The bill would increase renewable sources to like 50% by 2024 or something. The infrastructure already exists to accomplish something close to that, if not achieve it right now, but the power company can't profit as much on the abundant solar power, so they ran ads under several different names, basically threatening price gouging if the prop passed, so it failed. I hate that.

But a bill also passed which was effectively a power grab by Ducey to control campaign finance decisions, taking those decisions out of a nonpartisan committee's hands, and putting it in the hands of a committee he'll appoint himself.

And a blanket ban on all new service taxes passed, which, of course, means any new revenue needed will have to be generated through increased income taxes, and does no one actually think about which of an income tax and a luxury dog grooming or whatever tax is more likely to actually affect them?

I mean, that's a pretty sizable Latino turnout for Cruz in a state with a pretty sizable Latino population.

Then again, they might just be pissed off that an Irish guy is using "Beto" as a short form for Robert.

Dems gained 3 House seats in PA, and even gained 2 seats in FL.

Gerrymandering won again in NC and OH.

Ontario passed a similar bill under the last government (well, two governments ago but the same party ruled the same way for 15 years here so). They shut down all the coal-fired generators, made a commitment to wind down operations at one of the three nuclear plants in the province and promised to go nuts on wind and biomass.

The result was electricity prices that rose at 4 times the rate of inflation since 2006, costing Ontario users twice what people in neighbouring Quebec pay. Low-income users were having their power turned off in the middle of the winter because they couldn't keep up with the rate hikes. The government ended up cancelling two gas-fired generating stations in Toronto suburbs because it turned out that people in those suburbs weren't really keen on having generating stations in their neighbourhoods and there was an election going on; that wound up costing them a billion dollars. Nuclear station refurbishments went overbudget to the tune of almost $10 billion. The government who railed against the previous Conservative gov't's plan to privatize electricity went ahead and did that anyway once they were drowning in a deficit so high it raised the debt level of the province to the highest of any jurisdiction in North America besides the federal government of the United States, and then once another election was coming up decided to give a 25% rebate on electricity prices entirely financed on debt because they clearly hadn't learned their lesson. And this is all before we get into the carbon tax.

Green energy sounds like a great idea but I'm not sure there's a government around that has any clue how to actually implement a strategy that doesn't end in financial catastrophe. Ours sure as shit wasn't one.

Fuck Texas. Please secede. Take the rest of the "deep south" with you.

We need more smart people to move here.

Yeah.

I see a flaw in your logic.

And the guy that would have put an end to it didn't make it into the Governor's mansion. Instead we get an Insurance company puppet.

I don't understand the rural voter. They are isolated, statistically not as well educated, have little to no prospects for major business or good employment opportunities, and are typically in greater need of protection from the costs of caring for their typically poorer health.

And they keep voting for the people that put them in that situation and are happier than a pig in shit to keep them there. And what's more, they seem to relish the idea of dragging everyone else down to their level. While somehow acting superior.

It's a simple fact that half the people you meet are dumber than average.

The Democrats aren't seriously going to let Pelosi be Speaker again are they? Why do they hate themselves?

You're correct...you don't understand the self sufficiency of the rural populace. That's on you...

Grand scheme of things, it is pretty good for him and his party though. They picked up Senate seats and made it incredibly difficult for the Democrats to retake the Senate in 2020. At best, they're looking at a map that gives them a chance to flip seats in NC, IA, CO, NE and maybe TX and AZ while being assured to lose one in AL and maybe in VA and MI. With the GOP likely having a 5 seat majority by the time this race is settled and with Donald Trump on the ticket (likely with a good economy and low unemployment) that's a tough flip and means the GOP would likely have 6 straight years of Senate and White House control to pack the courts with their appointees.

Meanwhile, the Democrats can investigate Trump's tax returns, I guess.

If that's what they focus on, they deserve the ridicule they will get.

It stands to reason Mueller already has the tax returns. Let him finish his job. The Dems to focus on all that stuff they said about health care, human rights and student debt and whatever to get themselves elected. Chasing Donnie's tax returns is a losing proposition, especially when someone else is already doing it.

In other news, here is an inspiring photo showing dedicated public servant Mitch McConnell doing his duty as a citizen:

Prefacing this with my belief that any wrongdoing in governance is wrong, but unless they get a lead where Trump himself actually did something incredibly, incomprehensibly unlawful during the campaign or while in office I hope they do more like you said and focus on their own issues rather than Benghazi the shit out of Trump. It will have literally no effect on 2020 and any noise they make in the house really, really needs to be focused on that.

Yep, and it could continue to do so for a while. This is now 4 consecutive Congressional elections that have taken place under maps that were later declared - or already have been in the case of this year - unconstitutional.

We also added some ill-advised amendments to our state constitution (though successfully blocked two bad ones).

The only solace I'm taking is that the rulings that various state-level congressional districts (referred to as our General Assembly) were ALSO unconstitutional at least resulted in breaking the veto-proof majorities in both houses of the GA. With a Dem governor and no longer having a veto-proof majority, we have the first actual check of GA power in NC since the 2012 cycle.
