To those that are upset about the recent shift along the offensive line, stop kicking the tree and take a look at the beautiful forest before us.



I would like to respond to two points in this post-->



1. "Brandon Scherff is needed more at ROT than at ROG".

2. "You do not draft an OG's at #5".



Most of you are probably familiar with the basics of game theory. And when it comes to protecting the QB, we can consider the optimization of an offensive line a chess-move in a zero sum game. It is my argument that a scenario in which Scherff is moved to ROG and Moses develops at ROT produces an outcome with the highest immediate and future yield by maximizing talent distribution when compared to the next best alternative.



Consider scenarios A and B:



Scenario A: Spencer Long at ROG and Brandon Scherff at ROT.



Scenario B: Brandon Scherff at ROG and Morgan Moses at ROT.



Scenario A: we have a third round (more accurately 4th-5th round) talent at the guard position. It is no secret that Long is athletically limited and would likely rely heavily on technique, intellect, and brute strength in order to eventually develop into a serviceable OG. Due to said limitations, Long would offer very limited support to the demanding ROT position during the 2015 season and onward. Do not be mistaken, Brandon Scherff could play ROT for this team. He is athletic enough to overcome some of his physical limitations (arm length, and foot speed). Scherff would likely be a serviceable ROT this season and would probably have a ceiling at "Good" with regards to his future career. Scherff, however, would likely develop on an island as help from the ROG position would be limited.

Conclusion: ROG (serviceable), ROT (serviceable-->good)

Scenario B: Every criticism of Scherff during the draft pointed to his limitations as an OT. Coupled with every, (I am not exaggerating) single criticism were glowing remarks about his potential at the OG position. A couple sources likened him to Zack Martin but delineated that Scherff was even more physically gifted. I digress. Barring injury, Scherffwill develop into a Pro-Bowl OG (it may even happen this year in our run heavy offense). Scherff's prowess at OG would likely mean less pressure on the ROT position (think blitz pickup, down-blocking, trapping, pulling, i.e. more creative blocking schema). Insert Moses. Moses has all of the physical attributes of a tackle. His knock coming out of college was technique. It appears he has developed in that department, but by NO means is Moses a bookend OT this year. I believe Moses, however, in three years could develop into a "serviceable", maybe even "good" ROT. Due to the compounding nature of talent on a football team, especially for units like the OL, I believe that the coupling of a nascent Pro-Bowl OG with a high-ceiling, physically gifted ROT would produce the highest performance yield for the 2015 season due to the talent diffusion from the ROG position. I believe that scenario B could also precipitate a situation in which our ROL out preforms our LOL for years to come.

Conclusion: ROG (Pro-Bowl), ROT (serviceable-->good-->great*)

Finally, to the naysayers who respond, "but you don't draft an OG #5 over all". I have to disagree with you. In my opinion, the expectations for a top 5 draft pick are that they impact your team immediately. Compare scenarios A and B to the original scenario of 2014, A' (Chris Chester and Tom Compton/TyPo). The drafting of Scherff may have precipitated the potential for a dramatic increase in talent and production at TWO positions when compared to A'. In fact, I would attest that productivity and talent disparity between Scenario B and A/A' marks a greater impact than whatever influence Leonard Williams may have had on an already bolstered defensive front (this topic will be debated for years).

RICHMOND, Va. -- The post-practice work for Robert Griffin III included a familiar face: his father. After practice, Griffin worked on dropping back and throwing over pass-rushers. Only this time, instead of tossing over Jason Hatcher or Ryan Kerrigan, it was Robert Griffin, Jr.

Griffin has been the last player off the field, by a good 10 minutes, after each of the past two practices. Monday, he worked with some of the equipment men, who often catch his throws after practice. At times Griffin would throw over his dad's outstretched arms and other times his father would rush at him, forcing his son to move a little, reset and hit his target.

It capped a day in which Griffin had to make some throws under duress, some of which fell incomplete. In some cases, his accuracy was terrific; in others, not so much. On one, Griffin almost stood as tall as he could at the end of a five-step drop and tried to throw over the line; the ball was at the feet of tight end Je'Ron Hamm. Another time he slid right and overthrew Garcon.

But there were good passes as well, one of which found Garcon. It required patience by Griffin and came off of play-action as he waited for Garcon on a crosser vs. DeAngelo Hall. He led Garcon on the 15-yard throw, hitting him in stride as he turned up the field.

In 7-on-7 work, Griffin and Garcon teamed up again. Garcon ran a deep post, Griffin looked left, turned back, reset his feet and threw a perfect ball. Garcon ran past safety Dashon Goldson and caught the ball in stride.

Griffin worked on some straight deep drops; had one where he dropped, used a shoulder fake to one side and threw back to the other for receiver Ryan Grant, but it was incomplete. Another straight drop led to a pass for rookie Evan Spencer, who dropped the ball.

Griffin and Garcon hooked up one last time as the receiver made a nice grab of a throw below the knees.

One thing you guys need to consider regarding the Oline shift, is this may be a one year plan. They could be evaluating both Moses and Scherff long-term as both the tackles. Just using Scherff this year at guard to get used to the game at the pro level and getting Moses reps on the right side. Then not resign Trent Williams. However Callahan would have to evaluate this scenario in practices now to determine if he thinks he can get those two guys playing at a high level in those positions in the future.

you could be right about this however i think pretty soon we see an extension coming out in the press

but we have morris pot roast , robinson and Rg3 to pay (if he works out ) so maybe they are looking to let trent walk . i hope not because then we are drafting a LT
