- Safety Duke Ihenacho clearly was ready to play in pads Saturday. During a run in full-team work, rookie back Matt Jones ran to his left where Ihenacho greeted him with a hard pop, knocking the 231-pound Jones to the ground. Ihenacho skipped for about 20 yards as he left the field. Yes, a bit pumped.
- The defense always makes a concerted effort to cause turnovers -- yet it’s something everyone always talks about when there’s a new coordinator. But what I’ve seen different is how aggressive they are trying to strip the ball.Trenton Robinson tried to strip the ball from Silas Redd, but he looked more like a guy trying to wail on someone in a fight. Redd protected the ball.
- Safety Kyshoen Jarrett was involved in a loud collision with Jones at the end of a run. To Jarrett’s credit, he held his ground and did not get moved back. Jarrett is listed at 5-foot-10, 200 pounds.
- Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan displayed his power vs. rookie right tackleBrandon Scherff, driving him back on one rush with his right hand. Just got up under his pads and drove. Scherff was stood up and moved back.
- Safety Jeron Johnson didn’t like his rep in a one-on-one tackle/wrap drill vs. receiver Rashad Ross. So he asked Ross to go again. On their next one, Johnson attacked Ross’ outside shoulder, but the receiver spun back to the inside. Johnson told him, “You do that, and I have inside pursuit coming.” In other words: His help was to the inside.
- Corner Tevin Mitchel, who hurt his right shoulder and was being evaluated after practice, has been up and down -- as you would expect from a rookie. He needed to be better with his hands at the line in one-on-one work, causing him to lose on one route. On his next rep, vs. receiver Reggie Bell, he was better with both his hands and feet and did a much better job on the play. Later, Ryan Grant ran a terrific comeback vs. him, creating about five yards of separation. Excellent body control from Grant, too. But two other plays stood out, including where he was more patient at the line and drove well on the ball. On his last snap, vs. Jamison Crowder, he won because he used his leverage well. He got caught leaning a little bit, but because of how he was shaded, it didn’t hurt him one bit.
- Mitchel will be in the mix for the slot position with Bashaud Breeland out, but he has a ways to go. So, too, will be Justin Rogers and safety Kyshoen Jarrett(more on this Sunday). Jarrett was a safety at Virginia Tech, though he worked in the slot in practices there. But he was beaten by rookie receiverEvan Spencer in a one-on-one.
- Corner David Amerson worked with the starting defense with both DeAngelo Hall (day off) and Breeland (knee) sidelined. Amerson was praised on one play in 11-on-11 for his run support vs. back Alfred Morris.
- On one stunt, rookie linebacker Preston Smith was a bit too upright coming through the middle and tight end Je’Ron Hamm was able to take him wide -- away from the play. Haven't seen enough from Smith yet to think he'll truly challenge for the starting job like I thought he would (I think the team was expecting this to happen, too; at least before camp and the addition of Junior Galette). Haven't seen end Stephen Paea make much noise in the one-on-one work, either. Have not focused on him in full-team drills, though.
