I don't mind this trade; Mason's an upgrade over our existing backup ugliness, and he maybe has some upside. With a different goaltending coach, perhaps he can be returned to his 08/09 form.

Sure, this isn't likely, but I still like him as a backup to whoever we replace the Bryz with in the summer.

Leighton is worth nothing, isn't he? Didn't he clear waivers several times over the last few years? If so, isn't the deal really just Mason for a 3rd? We wanted this more than they did, so maybe they get a slight edge. But I'll bet the 3rd rounder NEVER plays a game in the NHL.

a third rounder too cmon Homer

I'm cool with the Mason trade plenty of time for this kid to turn things around lots of upside and low risk. Do 3rds even pan out they were saying 85% of 2nds don't even end up in the NHL. He could end up being our starter at some point.

Damn no luck. The TD is now expired!

we'll still be hearing about trades trickling through for at least another hour.. that's usually how it works

(the fact that leighton went in the mason deal has me feeling it less, i thought they were gunna be at 51 contracts )

pretty much.. i actually think leighton cleared like 3 days ago

i still think the 3rd rd pick is too much to give up, but the chances of that 3rd rounder working out aren't very good like you say.. so i'm not pissed. i like the acquisition of mason.

ehhhhhhh.. he's been pretty atrocious haha

still, he has a lot of potential. he's only 24 and was in the running for the vezina a couple years ago.

plus he hits RFA this summer, and you can probably get him at a lower cap hit because he's been so bad lately.

i like the acquisition, just waiting to see the return before i say i like the trade.

ah shit.. qualifying offers have to be at least the last salary of the player.. to qualify mason they'll have to sign him to at least a 3.2 mil hit (stole this from another board's poster)

i wonder if the qualifying offer rules are the same in the new CBA?

I hope he's our starts for us as soon as next game.

i bet he gets a lot of looks over the rest of the season.. essentially a tryout for him to see if the flyers are comfortable buying out bryz..

put up or shut up time for bryzy too

it at least makes for an interesting storyline to follow the rest of the season

Yeah, I don't see Mason as a long term answer for Philly. He's an upgrade over Leighton but that's about it. I don't see him being the starter now or in the future.

Then we need to get somebody else who will be our starter because there is no way we go forward this summer with out getting out of Bryz contract.

He's a RFA, the only way he gets a pay cut is if they re-sign him prior to the Qualifying period.

more from meltzer's commenters. that would be ideal IMO.. sign him to like a 2 year, 2 mil cap hit to be the backup.. see if he can steal the spot from bryz, if he can, buy bryz out next summer, if not, at least you have a backup goalie

Look on the bright side, this years draft and off-season should be very exciting for the Flyers. Snider won't want to keep this crap hole of a team intact for too long.

Ok boys. This is my opinion how this season and offseason will go. My guess Mason will be our starting goaltender next season. Bryzy is history in my opinion. Offseason moves. Mez, Briere, and a couple of other pieces will be moved. Our possible targets will be Yandle and Bobby Ryan.
