I dont know that I agree. Ruth has been highly praised by many people since his playing days. In some circles, he is even considered the best player ever.

Now JD Drew, on the other hand, was a pretty good player, and I think deserved more attention.

JD was overhyped when he came up with the Cardinals and I think that hurt him in the eyes of the fans his whole career. People were always expecting Roy Hobbs and got a legit everyday starter instead.

I didn't know Ruth's last season was with the Boston Braves.

Because the Yankees wouldn't let him be manager, he went to Boston to be the Player/Manager. It was not one of the finer moments of his career.

The nagging injuries (i.e. vertigo) were what did him in. He played at a very high level at times (2004, 2001, 2008/09, etc.), but outside of 2004, he never really put it together over a full season. Drew batted .305/.436/.569 in 2004 and finished with 8.3 bWAR. That would usually be enough to lead the league most years, but he finished t-5th (with Todd Helton) in the NL. Bonds finished with 10.6. Beltre and Rolen had 9+. Also, there was some guy named Albert Pujols that was kinda good. Meanwhile, there was only one position player with 8+ WAR in the AL that year (Ichiro at 9.1).

I need to go look at his stats, I knew he would put it all together for periods of time. I didn't realize he had a full year once.

Not that I'd call 145 games a "full year", but he did have 645 PA.

He also batted .279/.392/.522 in 139 games (134 OPS+) with good defense in 2009.
